The new Sparty monument will be unveiled Wednesday.

Sparty is about to be celebrated in bronze on Michigan State's campus.

The university on Wednesday at 4 p.m. will unveil the new Sparty monument, which will be housed on the main floor of the MSU Union.

“He will become an icon on campus that every Spartan will want to see," said Tami Kuhn, director of the MSU Union. "We are excited to see generations of Spartans add photos with bronze Sparty to their collection of MSU memories.”

Don't mistake this monument for "The Spartan," which is outside Spartan Stadium and near the Red Cedar River. That statue has taken on the nickname of "Sparty" over the years, but it depicts a warrior.

The new statue depicts Sparty as the mascot has looked since unveiled in 1989.

The statue was commissioned in 2015, and will cost about $150,000, through private donations. About $135,000 already has been raised.

Alison Brown of Troutdale, Oregon, is the sculptor.
