The funeral service for former Michigan State football player Mylan Hicks will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at New Providence Baptist Church, 18211 Plymouth Road in Detroit.

The family service starts at 10 a.m. but the 11 a.m. ceremony is open to the public. Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio and the Spartans are expected to attend the service.

Hicks played linebacker and defensive back at MSU in 2010-14 after graduating from Detroit Renaissance. He was shot and killed Sept. 25 in Calgary, Alberta. Hicks was 23. Nelson Lugela, 19, was charged with second-degree murder in Hicks' death.

Hicks was playing for the Calgary Stampede of the Canadian Football League. He is the second member of MSU’s 2013 Big Ten championship and Rose Bowl team to die this year. Punter Mike Sadler was killed along with Nebraska punter Sam Foltz in an auto accident on July 23 near Waukesha, Wis.

MSU also released a photo of its tribute to Hicks for Saturday’s game against BYU, with his No. 6 embedded in the helmet logo at midfield of Spartan Stadium. The school did the same for former punter Mike Sadler’s No. 3 at the Wisconsin game.
