METH CHECKS: Several Battle Creek police officers and parole and probation agents were conducted a sweep of the city and Bedford Township on Friday, searching for people making or using methamphetamine. Sgt. Jeff Case said the operation was the fifth in the last several months. Officers had a list of homes where they believed people might be using or making the drug based on past investigations or tips. "We are trying to deal with the problem of meth," Case said. He said officers are either just knocking on doors and attempting to talk to people or conducting searches of home of those people on parole or probation. By late afternoon officers had been to 10 houses and had not found any of the drug. Some of the homes were vacant and at others no one was home. "We know we have been less successful this time," Case said, as the operation continued. "But the problem is not gone."
