More than 100 former Miller College students have enrolled in Western Michigan University courses after the Battle Creek college closed in June.

WMU officials announced in a news release that 109 former Miller College students are taking courses at WMU's Kendall Center in Battle Creek. Classes start Sept. 6.

Miller College closed in June because of financial difficulties. WMU partnered with Miller to offer a teach-out program through which Miller's students could complete their studies and get their degrees.

Students had the option to take online classes, classes with face-to-face instruction and classes that combine both teaching approaches.

Officials said 13 elementary education students, 49 nursing students and 33 university studies students are participating in the teach-out programs, while 14 others are taking other classes at the Kendall Center.

The college has said Miller students within 15 credit hours of completion are eligible for the teach-out agreement approved by the Higher Learning Commission. Those within 30 credit hours can be eligible for an "extended" teach-out.

"We are pleased to have former Miller College students enroll at WMU through our teach-out programs," WMU-Battle Creek Regional Director Luann Harden said in a news release. "We have a continued commitment to the Battle Creek community. It is important for us to ensure all students have a smooth transition and are able to continue their education and graduate on time."
