IL Reps Pushing for Term Limits and Redistricting Reform this Fall

Illinois Republicans plan to push for Term Limits and Redistricting Reform when lawmakers return to Springfield this fall.

At at press conference on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, Republican Senator Neil Anderson was joined by Tony McCombie and Dan Swanson, candidates for State Representative, in Moline. The group argued that reforms would help curb corruption in Springfield by removing career politicians from office.

"Until we do that, the state of Illinois is going to stay where it's at, and we can't accept that anymore," said McCombie.

Last month, a Cook County Judge blocked a Redistricting Referendum from the November ballot, despite a State-Wide petition. The Illinois Supreme Court is now re-considering the request, but in the meantime, local Republicans are calling on House Speaker Mike Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton to introduce both issues during the veto session this November.

"We've got two ways we can go -- the Supreme Court, or we can use the legislators to pass it for us, to get it on the ballot. That's what we're after. Let the people vote; let them decide," said Swanson.

Redistricting Reform has seen support from members of both Political Parties.

"I certainly support redistricting efforts, as long as our minority populations are protected," said Mike Halpin, Democratic candidate for the Illinois House.

However, Halpin and other Democratic candidates have been less supportive of Term Limits, arguing that Voters should decide when they've had enough.

"We've done it on several occasions over the past three or four cycles, throwing out both Democratic and Republican incumbents, so I think I leave it to the wisdom of the voters as to who they want to represent them," said Halpin.

The fall Veto session begins on November 15, 2016.
