MSU's Costello to sign with Hawks, Forbes to Spurs

Bryn Forbes has agreed to play for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Summer League, making it four Michigan State players who will continue their pro basketball careers.

The former Sexton High and MSU star confirmed to the Lansing State Journal will join the Spurs’ team in Salt Lake City from July 4-7 and in Las Vegas from July 8-18.

In Vegas, he will play against former MSU teammate Matt Costello, who earlier Friday agreed to play for the Atlanta Hawks in the summer league. Both players earned all-tournament honors at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament predraft workouts in April.

Forbes averaged 14.4 points and 2.1 rebounds as a senior, ranking second in Division I basketball by making 48.1 percent of his 3-point attempts. He led the three-game Portsmouth tournament with 20.3 points per game and 61 points to go with 2.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals. He made 50 percent of his shots (21 of 42) and a tournament-best 13 3-pointers on 30 attempts from beyond the arc.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound shooting guard played his first two years at Cleveland State before transferring to MSU. Forbes’ high school teammate, Denzel Valentine, was drafted by the Chicago Bulls with the No. 14 overall pick Thursday night.

Costello, a 6-foot-10 and 245-pound forward, averaged 10.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists during his senior season for the Spartans. The Linwood native and Bay City Western High product averaged 12.3 points and 11.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists at Portsmouth while shooting 60 percent (15 of 25) from the field.

Deyonta Davis was drafted by Boston with the No. 31 pick of the draft, the first in the second round, and his rights reportedly will be traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.
