Two-time World Series champion and former Michigan State standout Kirk Gibson is headed to the Michigan Baseball Hall of Fame.

Gibson and the Homer High School baseball dynasty led by coach Scott Salow from 2003-06 are part of the second induction class for the hall of fame, which is located inside Cooley Law School Stadium. They were selected by a vote the Hall of Fame committee.

Gibson and the Homer baseball dynasty will be formally inducted into the hall of fame Saturday, June 25, prior to a contest between the West Michigan Whitecaps and Lansing Lugnuts. Gibson's son, Cam, is currently an outfielder for the Whitecaps.

Gibson, who was drafted 12th overall by the Detroit Tigers after one record-setting baseball season at MSU, spent 17 years in the majors. He was part of the 1984 Tiger team that won the World Series and also won a championship in 1988 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Gibson clinched the 1984 World Series title for the Tigers with a home run in one of the most notable moments of his playing career. His other iconic moment came when he hit a pinch-hit game-winning homer for the Dodgers in Game 1 of 1988 World Series.

Gibson, who was the 1988 National League MVP, was the manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2010-2014 and is now an analyst on Fox Sports Detroit.

Homer posted a 143-6 record from 2003-06 and set a national and state records for consecutive wins with 75 during that stretch. During their win streak, Homer won 47 games via the mercy rule, posted 41 shutouts and 12 no-hitters. Josh Collmenter, who is a pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, was part of that success for Homer, which captured state titles in 2004 and 2006.

Gibson and the Homer dynasty will join a Michigan Baseball Hall of Fame that already includes former major leaguers Jim Abbott, Bill Freehan, Charlie Gehringer, Al Kaline, Hal Newhouser, John Smoltz and Alan Trammell. Former Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell and high school baseball coaches Pat O'Keefe (Grand Ledge) and Larry Tuttle (Blissfield) were also inducted into the hall last year.
