MSU women's golf starts the day in 4th at Lady Buckeye Invitational

The Michigan State women’s golf team started the day in fourth place at the Lady Buckeye Invitational after playing 36 holes on Saturday at the Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University Golf Club. The No. 42 Spartans shot 10-over-par 298 in the first round and improved by four shots in the second round with a 294 to sit at 16-over 592 heading into Sunday’s third and final round.

No. 14 Kent State leads the 12-team field with a 1-under 575, followed by Indiana (586) and No. 43 Ohio State (591).

The Spartans have two golfers in medalist contention, as sophomore Sarah Burnham is in second place and senior Gabby Yurik is in third.

Burnham shot an even-par 72 in the morning, followed by a 3-under 69 in the afternoon to card a 141 for the day. The second-round 69 marked her team-leading 12th under-par round of the season. She is three shots behind leader Josee Doyon of Kent State (70-68—138).

Yurik is six shots back at even-par 144. She opened with a 4-over 74 but moved up seven spots on the leaderboard into third with an afternoon 70 (-2) in a round that included five birdies. Yurik had a team-best nine birdies overall in her 36 holes.

Katie Sharp, coming off her first-place finish at the Clemson Invitational, fired back-to-back rounds of 76 and is tied for 24th on the leaderboard at 8-over 152.

Freshman Carolyn Markley is tied for 33rd at 155 (76-79), while Alison Knowles is tied for 47th (79-80—159) and Jacqueline Setas is tied for 49th (80-80—160).

MSU was to tee off beginning at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning from hole No. 1, along with Toledo and Illinois. Live scoring is available on golfstat.com.
