EAST LANSING -- Five years into his Michigan State football career, Evan Jones finally is listed as a first-string defensive end on the spring depth chart.

Michigan State defensive end Evan Jones practices in East Lansing on Tuesday, April 12, 2016.

“You work for everything you earn and earn everything you get,” Jones said this week. “I came from a small town, and my parents taught me that. You come out here every single day and you work.”

The 6-foot-5, 246-pounder, who played at Ridgewood High in West Lafayette, Ohio, has played in 25 games at MSU. He made seven tackles in 13 games last year.

“It was great experience last season,” Jones said. “You can come out and practice as much as you want, but being in a game is completely different. Having that experience gives you an edge, for sure.”

Jones, who was recruited as a tight end before moving to defensive end his redshirt freshman year, believes he is stronger and faster this spring.

“Feeling good about the spring game and the coming season,” he said. “I’m taking what I’ve learned from all the guys over the years on the D-line and advancing with it. Focusing on the little things and getting better at them each day.”

“I read plays better now,” Jones said. “I read the offensive formations faster. I’m understanding the game better.”

Jones credits learning from past MSU defenders.

“It’s all about the little things,” Jones said. “Many off the field, too. You got to know your priorities. Go to all your classes, be there on time and make the dean’s list, if you can. That translates on to the football field. Focusing on the little things is what I’m about.”
