Calhoun makes it a threepeat on All-Big Ten first team

The Detroit News

Michigan State defensive end Shilique Calhoun was named first-team All-Big Ten by the coaches and the media on Monday, the third straight season he has earned that honor.

Michigan State defensive end Shilique Calhoun has 8.5 sacks this season.

The fifth-year senior was the first Michigan State player to earn first-team honors in three straight seasons since linebacker Greg Jones accomplished the same feat from 2008-10.

Calhoun has 8.5 sacks this season and came up short in his quest for a second Defensive Lineman of the Year, which he won as a sophomore in 2013. Ohio State's Joey Bosa earned that honor this season.

"Shilique Calhoun continues to be a dominant, disruptive force on the defensive line," Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio. "He has the flair for providing a spark when the team needs it, with tackles for losses, sacks and blocked field goals. Shilique is a veteran player with an extensive amount of knowledge of our entire defense, who plays with great effort and toughness. He's an impact player and his teammates continue to feed off his energy."

The Big Ten honored the defense and special teams on Monday and will hand out the offensive awards on Tuesday.

Other Michigan State players to earn recognition on Monday included sophomore defensive tackle Malik McDowell, who was second team from the coaches and media, while junior linebacker Riley Bullough was second team from the media and third team by the coaches. Senior linebacker Darien Harris was third-team from the coaches while junior defensive back Demetrious Cox was also third-team from the coaches.

Senior defensive tackle Joel Heath, senior defensive end Lawrence Thomas and sophomore linebacker Jon Reschke were all named honorable mention.
Harris was also Michigan State's winner of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
