Easter egg decorating, for some, can be an art. I love the idea of doing something a bit beyond the run-of-the-mill dye kit, but I don’t want to spend a fortune or hours to achieve my DIY decorative Easter eggs.

In our family, egg dying is a tradition my kids, my mom and I do together on Easter. So it’s important that the techniques I choose are easy enough for the kids, simple enough that we can still prepare Easter dinner and cheap enough that they won’t break the bank.

Dying Easter eggs is a popular Easter tradition. Not only are they fun to make in different colors and patterns, but they’re also super simple to do as well.

In fact, millions of families around the world take part in this fun holiday tradition – and there’s no reason you can’t do it this year, too! 

Since we’re past the year of  “sky-high egg prices”, now is the time to buy a dozen or two and let the decorating fun begin. 

How to dye Easter eggs

You could go out and buy an Easter egg decorating kit, but there’s no need. Start with a basic egg-dying recipe using food coloring. You can repurpose leftover butter or whipped-topping tubs to hold the dye for eggs. (Not only is that an earth-friendly choice, but you don’t need to worry about staining your regular bowls.)

Natural egg dyes for Easter egg decorating

Alternatively, you can use natural ingredients to create DIY Easter egg dye. Fruit and onion skins are among the everyday kitchen ingredients you can use to make natural egg dye. \\Coffee, turmeric and beets are among the other natural products that you can use to dye Easter eggs.

Easter egg decorating ideas

You can find plenty of DIY ideas for decorating Easter egg shells and making photo-worthy eggs without resorting to an Easter egg decorating kit. We love these ideas for beautiful Easter eggs that utilize items and ingredients you likely have at home already.

Creative Easter egg dying techniques

Some fun egg dying ideas don’t actually involve dye or directly dying the eggs. You can dye eggs with wet tissue paper, allowing the colors to seep from the paper onto your eggs.

You can create beautiful mottled colored Easter eggs using whipped cream, or give them crazy colorful designs with crayon shavings (a useful purpose for all those broken crayons your kids no longer use).

You can also use washable markers and a plastic bag to transfer color to your Easter eggs to give them a unique no-dye look. Scraps of silk fabric (from old ties, scarves, etc.) create these masterpieces.

Striped Easter eggs

Stripes are easy Easter egg designs even kids can make. Use either rubber bands or electrical tape to create geometric, multi-color designs.

Decoupage Easter eggs

Using craft glue or decoupage techniques, you can make beautiful designs on eggs with paper napkins or fabric scraps. If using two-ply napkins,  separate the top layer with the design from the bottom white layer.

Little kids will love the cute chicks and rabbits you can make out of your dyed Easter eggs. The adorable Easter egg critters make great centerpieces for an Easter brunch or dinner, or adornments for your Easter basket.

All-natural Easter egg decorating

Armenian tradition has a beautiful method for dying and decorating Easter eggs using all-natural ingredients. All you need are onion skins, leafy herbs (parsley, cilantro and dill make pretty patterns) and a pair of nylons.

(Yes, this is yet another use for your old pantyhose!)

Tie-dye Easter eggs

These tie-dye eggs are done right in the sink — talk about ease of cleanup! All you need are the eggs, paper towels, food coloring and a spray bottle of water.

Oh, and maybe some rubber gloves and a smock so you don’t get stains everywhere.

What to do with leftover Easter egg dye

You might be thinking that you have to ditch the leftover egg dye once you’re done with the decorated Easter eggs. That couldn’t be further from the truth! 

You can use the leftover egg dye for painting, and decorating other items on the craft table. Mix it with a bit of water to create an epic watercolor option. 

You can also use the dye to color slime, playdough, or items like that. Just know that it will likely stain hands – which is why I always end up using it in some other type of art form.

Living Easter baskets provide you with good-for-you goodies long after traditional baskets are empty. Follow these simple steps for creating your own tasty Easter basket.

Prepare your basket

Apply spray paint to freshen up your basket and help it withstand watering. Before spraying, wipe down the surface and handle to eliminate dust or dirt. Use glossy paint, and in a well-ventilated area, spray with several thin coats, waiting for the basket to dry between coats.

Once it’s dry, line the basket with a 1-inch layer of sphagnum moss or with plastic that you have poked with holes to allow for drainage. Fill with potting soil to within an inch of the top rim of the basket.

Choose plants

Though he may bring candy for the kids, the Easter bunny likes nibbling on a wide variety of tasty selections, including the following:

• Greens. Oodles of lettuce varieties exist, including romaine, red leaf and oak. Other greenery for making tasty salads includes arugula, mesclun, cilantro, Swiss chard and kale.
• Herbs. Add pizzazz to your cooking with fresh, tasty herbs, such as basil, chervil, chives, dill, mint, oregano, sage, thyme and the all-time bunny favorite — parsley.
• Carrots. No Easter basket would be complete without carrots. Because this plant is a root vegetable, you must plant carrots by seed. Though they will take some time to grow, you can enjoy the other plants in the basket while you’re waiting. For the quickest results, choose baby carrots, including fun selections like multi-colored varieties. Here are tips about how to grow carrots in containers.
• Radishes. Radishes must also be planted by seed. There is even a variety known as the Easter egg radish, which comes in white, purple, pink and red.
• Edible flowers. Blooming plants make a pretty addition to your Easter basket, and some flowers are edible. Good choices include nasturtiums, pansies, Johnny-jump-ups, violets and dianthus.

Planting and Care

• Plant greens, herbs and edible flowers in the basket at the same level they are in their existing nursery containers, leaving 2 to 3 inches between plants. While you want to leave room for growth, you also want the basket to appear full. If you are also planting seeds, sprinkle them in between the plants and press them into the soil to the same depth as the width of the seed. For very small seeds like carrots, simply sprinkle them on the soil surface and then cover with a very thin layer of soil.
• Water your basket well after planting and keep the soil moist but not soggy. If you planted seeds in your basket, mist to avoid washing the seeds away.
• Feed your basket monthly with a ½-strength solution of an organic fertilizer. Organic foods have a NPK ratio listed on the packaging no higher than 15-15-15.
• Be a bunny and harvest the plants in your basket often, which will keep things looking full and lush.

These are the fee-free days at U.S. National Parks for 2025:

• February 16: Presidents Day 
• May 25: Memorial Day.
• June 14: Flag Day/President Trump’s birthday.
• July 3–5: Independence Day weekend.
• August 25: 110th Birthday of the National Park Service.
• September 17: Constitution Day.

Here is just a sample of what you can do during free entrance days in the national parks. Be sure to go online or call before you go to verify times and other details, such as possible visitor restrictions.

Popular national parks

Cabrillo National Monument in California lies at the tip of the Point Loma Peninsula, just west of the city of San Diego. The Visitor Center features the “Age of Exploration” exhibit, films, and ranger-guided programs with interesting insights into the history of Cabrillo. Features of the park include views of the harbor and city of San Diego, whale watching in January and February, and birding is popular year round.

Dinosaur National Monument in Colorado and Utah has famous fossil finds, dramatic river canyons, mysterious petroglyphs and endless opportunities for adventure. Kids can earn a special Junior Ranger Paleontology badge by completing age-appropriate activities.

Yellowstone in Montana is our nation’s first National Park. Popular activities include picnicking, fishing and hiking. The park features the largest active geyser field in the world, including Old Faithful, along with amazing wildlife. 

The Grand Canyon in the northwest corner of Arizona and close to the borders of Utah and Nevada, provides many opportunities to learn about nature, science and history. Take a tour with a park ranger. Visit one of the many Information Centers. Watch a park orientation film (it starts every half hour from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily). Use your cell phone for a fun way to learn about the park and listen as park rangers give two-minute audio tours at points of interest on the South Rim. Padre Island National Seashore southeast of the city of Corpus Christi, Texas, is the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world. The park protects 70 miles of coastline, dunes, prairies, and wind tidal flats teeming with life. It is a safe nesting ground for the Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle and a haven for 380 bird species. It also has a rich history, including the Spanish shipwrecks of 1554.

Everglades National Park in Florida is America’s third-largest National Park at 1.5 million acres. The park provides important habitat for numerous rare and endangered species like the manatee, American crocodile and the elusive Florida panther. Popular activities include photographing birds, hiking and observing wildlife, and ranger-guided tours.

Especially for kids

At participating National Parks, kids can participate in the Junior Ranger program. Participating parks provide a FREE booklet that describes all sorts of age-appropriate activities in the park. When they’ve completed the tasks, they are awarded an official Junior Ranger badge.

Entrance fees to extremely popular parks are in the $20 to $30 range for private cars, and the cost may depend on the number of people 16 and older in the car (children 15 and younger are always free). Many of the smaller parks, historical sites and recreational areas have lower fees, and 265 sites are always free.

Other ways to save

Another way to save if you’re planning a trip that includes multiple national parks, is to consider the $80 annual pass that provides entrance to all national parks, national wildlife refuges, national forests, and many other federal lands — more than 2,000 in all. Also keep in mind that adults age 62 or over are eligible for a senior pass, which includes entry to the same parks as the annual pass but for less — $20 for one year or $80 for a lifetime pass. In addition,  a free lifetime pass to national parks and other federal recreation areas is available for eligible U.S. military veterans and Gold Star families. 

Find a park by going to the National Park Service website and using the search tool or interactive map. You can search for parks in your state or parks that feature activities you like, such as camping, fishing or hiking, as well as educational programs and historic sites.

Consider a potluck

Every Super Bowl party needs food, but you don’t have to do it all on your own. Prepare a few dishes and snacks yourself, then ask everyone to bring their favorite football food. It you send your invitations electronically, you can ask people to reply to the list with what they’ll bring to avoid duplication (although you really can’t have too many hot wings, can you?).

Enlist a party co-host

Having a friend help with the party will not only save you money, but will also save you time before and during game day. Choose the house with the most seating and divvy up the costs for food and other party essentials. You can also divide the chores so you’re only doing half the work.

The best snacks are also the cheapest 

All-time favorite football foods — chili, nachos and potato skins — are all cheap to make. Instead of buying fancy cupcakes topped with footballs, make and decorate your own football-themed treats. And, of course, look for supermarket sales and coupons for Game Day recipe staples, such as chips and soda.

Ask guests to BYOB

Beer and other alcoholic drinks are the most expensive part of any Super Bowl party, so ask guests to bring their own. You supply the ice and a cooler. Not only will you save, but you can have fun trying out the different brews everyone contributes.

Order pizza

If your friends don’t cook, or you’re just looking to keep things simple, you might want to order pizza. A lot of pizza places run Super Bowl deals, so you can sometimes get multiple pies without spending a fortune. If you belong to Costco, their pizzas are always a great deal, and you can get them to go. Check Living on the Cheap’s “Dining” page  for the latest deals before making any final decisions on where to order.

Skip fancy party decorations

Although it may be fun to have paper plates/bowls/cups with your team logo, they can be a bit pricey. You’ll save money if you instead buy those items in solid colors at a discount party store or dollar store. Alternate colors when you set them out, so when you look around the room, you’ll see your team’s colors in full force.

Add some cheap entertainment

Between the game, the halftime show, and the commercials, you should have all the entertainment you need. But if you want a little extra, play some Super Bowl trivia. You can get cheap miniature trophies or ribbons for the winners at most party stores. Frugal hosts could use food gifts as prizes; make some tasty treats to give away, or put together a fun themed gift basket filled with popcorn, chips, spray cheese, or football-shaped treats.

Use real dishes

The price of paper products seems to have skyrocketed over the past several years, so if you have enough glasses and plates to use real ones, you can save yourself some money that way. Make sure the dishwasher is empty beforehand, and keep loading it throughout the evening.

Visit the dollar store

The dollar store is a great place to pick up inexpensive party decorations. You don’t need to spend a great deal of money decorating, but you might want to pick up a few items (think pompoms and streamers) in both teams’ colors. You might also be able to get supplies to make your own decorations and cheap snacks like pretzels and nuts.

One thing I learned not long ago was how to consign clothes for sale in order to better afford new ones. This is also a great way to ensure your closet, drawers, and other storage areas are clutter-free.

Let’s dive into the best way to learn how to consign clothes. You can earn money easily, reduce clutter, and make room for new styles. 

Before heading to my first consignment store, I researched and had lengthy conversations with multiple store owners throughout Baltimore. Each store is different in terms of what it’s looking for, but here are a few tips for successful consigning:

How to sell to consignment shops

Call first. Many consignment stores will only take designer names, and most will take clothes by appointment only. Some fill up so quickly that they won’t meet with you until they’re ready for more stock. Calling first saves you time, energy, and frustration. 

Think about the time of year. Most consignment shops take only in-season clothes. It’s best to plan as early as possible because, just like other stores, consignment stores put clothes out on the racks seasonally. They may already have spring/summer clothing out, even though it’s still winter coat weather.

Make sure your clothes are washed and wrinkle-free. Most places will not take your used garments if they have the slightest stain.  If you have even just a couple of wrinkles, they will most likely ask you to get your piece dry-cleaned before bringing it back.

Start with some of your best pieces. That way, the next time you call, the store owner may be more inclined to meet with you sooner rather than later.

Don’t have any expectations. Don’t put a price on a piece of clothing unless you’re considering keeping it. The store owners know their own inventory and customers best, so leave the pricing up to them. Also, don’t expect them to like a piece of clothing as much as you might. It’s best to come to the store owners with an open mind.

Find out how and when you will receive payment. Each store works differently. Some may cut you a check for every item sold, or some may decide to cut you a check for items sold within a given period. They may even be able to set it up to pay you electronically. Also, not all stores will offer cash for your clothes – some may offer only store credit. Decide which one is more important.

Don’t bring anything to consign that you wouldn’t buy yourself. You are truly your best critic. If you bought something on a whim with unusual patterns or that was part of a trend that has been out of style for quite some time, consigning the item may not work. Most consignment store owners are very selective.

Every time I have consigned my clothing, it’s been a huge success. I continue to donate pieces I can’t consign to local charities. Working with a new consignment store to sell clothing is definitely a process, but it’s worthwhile. Who doesn’t love having extra spending money in exchange for something that could be just collecting dust?

Spending some time preparing your car for winter cannot only help prevent a breakdown or accident but can also save you money on repair costs and gas. If you don’t know how to get your car ready for plummeting temperatures and icy roads, this preparing your car for winter checklist of 12 quick and easy fall and winter car maintenance tips. Some things you can do yourself, while others require a mechanic.  All will save you money down the road.

How to prepare your car for winter

Cold weather car maintenance doesn’t have to be hard! As you can see, there are easy steps that you can take to ensure that your car is running the best way possible. 

Learn how to take care of your car in winter to keep it running and reliable! 

1. Get a tune-up.

If you’re due for a tune-up, schedule it for the fall. Cold winter weather magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance and rough idling.  Check your owner’s manual for the tune-up schedule and follow it.

2. Change the fluids.

Six fluids should be changed before the chilly winter temperatures come. These include brake system fluid, coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, washer fluid, and suspension differential fluid.

Sediment and other impurities can find their way into brake fluid, so a routine change is a smart idea. Some manufacturers don’t suggest a transmission fluid change until the car has logged 100,000 miles. But ask your mechanic if a change might be a good idea, considering the age and wear of your car.

Use cold-weather washer fluid in the winter and keep the reservoir full. Keep a bottle in the trunk; it will come in handy when grimy snow or road salt smears your windshield. As a general rule of thumb, this should be done every two years, advises the nonprofit Car Care Council.

3. Change your oil and oil filters.

Okay, we know oil is another fluid, but it deserves its own category. Regular oil changes prevent overheating and grime buildup. Changing the oil also improves fuel efficiency and reduces the risk of engine failure.

It’s especially important to plan a pre-winter oil change because oil thickens and becomes sluggish in winter temperatures. Consider changing to “winter weight” oil if you live in a cold climate. Want to keep your oil warm in wintry climates? Consider purchasing an electric blanket for your car’s oil system.

Don’t think you can ignore oil changes if you only drive in town. Those starts and stops can be tougher on the engine than highway road trips. Also, be diligent about changing the oil filter at recommended intervals.

4. Check your brakes.

Brakes are your car’s most important safety system (after you, the driver). Before ice and snow put your brakes to the test, make sure to get your brakes and brake fluid checked. Replace brake pads if  necessary, so you’ll be able to stop on a dime, even on slippery winter roads.

Tell your mechanic to check the emergency brake as well. Even if your brake pads are good, the cables or mechanical elements can seize or break, especially if they are unused.

5. Clean and check your car battery.

Cold weather is hard on batteries. Have the battery and charging system checked for optimum performance each fall. It’s especially important because so many computerized safety systems run off battery power.

You can use a tester to determine whether your battery is weak. If you aren’t comfortable doing this, go to an auto retailer like AutoZone or O’Reilly Auto Parts. They will test your battery for free.

In addition, you’ll want to clean your car battery. Check the battery posts for residue, then use a wire brush to remove it. Wipe down the battery case to remove grease and grime.

6. Make sure your heater and defroster still work.

Winter car care shouldn’t start the day temperatures plunge below freezing  and you discover your heater isn’t doing its job. Check the heater and defroster in the fall, before you need them, to determine if they are working properly. If they’re not, get them fixed ASAP.

7. Replace windshield wiper blades.

As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months. If yours have been leaving patches on your windshield, replace them now before the cold weather stiffens the rubber even more.  If you are in a climate where you use snow tires, consider using winter wiper blades, as well.  

It’s also a good idea to check the rubber seals around your car’s doors and windows.  If necessary, use a silicone treatment specially made for vehicles to reinvigorate them.

De-ice your windshield the same way the airlines do: Mix 2/3 rubbing alcohol and 1/3 water, then spray it from a spray bottle. Works like a charm. To prevent ice from forming on your wiper blades, use a rag to soak them with rubbing alcohol.

8. Test your headlights.

Shorter days in winter lead to more driving in the dark. Before Daylight Savings Time ends, check that your car’s exterior and interior lights and headlights work and are properly aimed. If headlights seem to be less powerful than they used to be, clean them. Use only a special cleaner that won’t scratch the finish, such as the 3M Headlight Restoration Kit.

9. Prep car tires for winter.

To prepare your car’s wheels for winter, plan to rotate the tires in the fall for even wear and a more comfortable ride. Or switch to winter tires, which offer better traction and help clear snow from the track.

In winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly. Always check tire pressure in the driveway, since driving as little as a mile to the supermarket can affect the reading.  And don’t forget to test the spare, too, especially if you’ve been lucky and haven’t needed it for a while.

10. Check the exhaust system.

Check your car for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed. A detector made for vehicles will alert you to problems.

11. Keep your gas tank full.

When winter comes, keep the gas tank at least half full at all times to reduce the chance of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. Plus, you never know when a sudden snow squall will stretch your commute to hours on the road. You’ll be thankful not to have to worry about running out of gas as you try to get home safely.

12. Put together a winter emergency kit.

Many drivers have been surprised by a sudden storm or stranded for a few hours in a vehicle that slid off the icy roads into a secluded area. For these unexpected situations, put together an emergency kit to store in your car. You’ll want to include an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables or a jump starter that works on a variety of devices. Other items to carry are a flashlight, flares, blanket, extra warm clothes (including gloves and hat), candles/matches, bottled water, dry food snacks and medications.

Another must have for winter driving? A fully charged cell phone. Though you can’t leave it in your car, try never to leave home without one.

Use one large light bulb instead of several small ones in areas that need bright light. Using lighting controls, such as dimmers, can help reduce energy use.

What is the most efficient temperature for a hot water heater?

Set your hot water heater temperature between 120 and 140 degrees. According to the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, for every 10ºF reduction in temperature, you can save from 3%–5% on your water heating costs. Don’t go too far, though; if you use a dishwasher, the hot water temperature should be at least 120 degrees (and no more than 150).

Speaking of dishwashers, if you have an Energy Star dishwasher, you’ll likely save hot water by using it each night rather than hand-washing dishes several times a day.

Repair water leaks on faucets and toilets. One drip per minute can waste up to 220 gallons of water per month, and you’ll literally be flushing money down the toilet. If it’s the hot water that is dripping, it will cost you even more.
