I imagine much of the TravelZork community feels the same. That’s why we all try to maximize rewards, points, and miles.

I hadn’t planned on revisiting the Las Vegas Visitor Profile Study after sharing how few people stay in complimentary rooms in Las Vegas. But lately, I’ve been working on several deal-related articles, and spending habits have been top of mind.

The TravelZork podcast recently discussed the Luxor and Excalibur $330 all‑inclusive deal. I did something similar for the Caesars deal at Flamingo, Harrah’s, and The Linq. 

I’ve also written about cheap eats and drinks on the Strip and off the Strip. But what really caught my attention was a story about a possible Las Vegas rebound in 2028, which reminded me that return visitors tend to spend less than first-timers. That makes sense since you remember where the deals are after you’ve experienced and enjoyed.

With money on my mind (and my mind on my money), I decided to dig back into the 

LVCVA report to see how people are spending in Las Vegas.

Spending Money In Las Vegas

On average, first-time visitors spend more than repeat visitors in every category, and it’s not even close.

That spending gap helps explain why the LVCVA invests so heavily in marketing. This section of the report even mirrors a finding from Formula 1’s research into its newest fans:

“Compared to repeat visitors, first-timers skew more female, white, Gen Z, lower income, and are more likely to be international (27% to 10%).”

Because newer visitors tend to be younger (mainly Gen Z), I was curious how their spending compares to that of their slightly older counterparts, the millennials.

Sorry, Gen X and boomers, we’re no longer being tracked by the LVCVA. But based on older data, the generational split looks similar to what we used to see.

It’s no surprise Gen Z spends more on shows and entertainment. Every younger generation tends to prioritize experiences.

What surprised me is that they spend more on shopping. Maybe that includes a visit to the nearest dispensary. 

Another interesting point was influencer impact. Only 12% of visitors said they engaged with influencer content before visiting Las Vegas, but those who did were far more likely to increase their spending.

Popular influencer content covers hotel stays, dining, drinks, shows, paid attractions, and live events. The report shows that those who view influencer content spend more across nearly every category except gaming.

Those who consumed influencer content spend more on each of these categories than those who didn’t. The only category where influencers didn’t show a financial impact was on gambling.

The bottom line with influencer content is that it’s not going anywhere with these kinds of financial results. 

This is probably a good time to remind you that influencer advertising in 2026 is advertising. The only difference from TV ads is the medium through which it’s consumed. 

I’m a sports fan who often writes for sports fans visiting Las Vegas. There’s only one spending habit that surprises me from sports fans visiting Las Vegas for an event. 

Non-sports visitors had a larger gambling budget than those who were in Las Vegas to watch a game. Sports fans are notoriously considered gamblers. 

Sports visitors spent $419.73 on sports events during their visit. I’m not sure what to make of that other than tickets, concessions, and merch are expensive.

Fast forward a week and interested parties have already come up with a name and design for the future ballers that will bring Las Vegas an NBA Championship: The Vegas Fees. A controversial name, if you ask me.

The Team Name Spins More than a Basketball

An anonymous source who works for a prominent tourism and conventions firm in Las Vegas said to me “Las Vegas has gotten a bad, yet accurate, rap for it’s fees. We plan to spin that narrative in a way that makes Vegas fees a positive thing for the community and visitors alike.”

Having heard that, I had to ask more. Why should the Vegas Fees be the name? What does that have to do with anything from a sports perspective? Here’s what they said “When you think about the many kind of fees in Las Vegas, and people’s experience with them, at first it’s a shock. When they get used to it, another new fee comes up. That is not only diligence but also the art of surprise. So we tie that into the lore of a team name. Vegas fees are unapologetic, unexpected, and unwaived. As are fees, so are The Vegas Fees. That’s the kind of impression we want the sports world to have about our NBA team. They can come out of no where, they aren’t going any where, and they have no regrets! Also, it’s double-speak, Orwell would be proud.”

Where Will They Play?

I heard MGM is interested. When I asked a friend who works for Caesars Entertainment (MGM’s competitor) what their thoughts were about the Vegas Fees, they only replied “This is what our guests have been asking for” while purposely avoiding eye contact and then she hurried off.

MGM has a strong interest in hosting the future Las Vegas team, “T-Mobile Arena was built for basketball and hockey,” MGM CEO Bill Hornbuckle said on social media and in a news release from the company. “Our long-standing relationship with the League is a positive one that stretches back many years, and we would welcome the opportunity to work with the NBA on creating an unforgettable fan experience.”

That decision falls on which ownership team wins the bidding process.

MGM dropped a $330 all-in deal for Luxor and Excalibur. The key to this price is that it “starts at” $330. Prices could be higher. Regardless of your opinion about the properties, this is a solid deal. Read the details here.  

I did a breakdown of the cost of the items in this deal. It looks like a deal at $330, but that might not be the case if the package deal is $700. See the breakdown here.

I also mentioned that these two properties only account for 6% of MGM’s profit. Vegas isn’t dead, and this will barely move the needle for MGM. This is just a way to pacify people complaining online. I speculate that the company will make as much money from one average couple at Aria, Bellagio, or Cosmopolitan as it will from 10 of these packages. Anyway, this is a solid deal since there are no blackouts.

Speaking at the J.P. Morgan Gaming, Lodging, Restaurant and Leisure Management Access Forum, Bill Hornbuckle said the LVCVA will be launching a big promotion in April. I’m guessing it will be similar to the Fabulous 5-Day Sale last year.

There was a lot of major news this week in Las Vegas. Caesars shared the first images of the Vandepump Hotel rooms. They’re the opposite of The Cromwell, and I love both. Rates without Caesars Rewards are down to $130 in June. I’ve seen plenty of people getting these rooms comp’d. Read more here.

In 2025, MGM Rewards added an Oceanview comp cruise for members who earn Gold status. For years, MGM Rewards offered a comp balcony cruise with Platinum status, but now the new benefit offers two separate cruises. In my experience, some Celebrity and Royal Caribbean phone agents were unaware of the additional cruise and incorrectly claimed that only one benefit is available per year.

The MGM cruises offer a significant discount compared to many cruises booked through other means. For example, a recent MyVegas cruise offer charged about $500 in taxes and fees for an interior room, while the MGM Platinum benefit offers a balcony cruise with onboard freeplay, credit, and more route options.

Separate, Not Combined

Comp cruises earned from status levels are separate offers, not one combined or enhanced benefit. Allegedly, phone reps need an offer code to book both the Platinum and Gold cruises, and unfortunately, MGM Rewards wasn’t clear about the offer codes. In 2025, I only received a platinum offer code and had to dig to find a Gold offer code.

I asked TravelZork Facebook community members about the Gold cruise, and had some friends who had only achieved MGM Rewards Gold status in 2025, and got the Gold offer code from them. In 2026, there will likely be a distinct offer code for both Gold and Platinum statuses. You can also reach out to MGM Rewards by phone or email for more details.

MGM-booked cruises through Royal Caribbean or Celebrity are appealing because they come with onboard freeplay, onboard credit, and casino play that contribute to MGM Rewards tier and comps earning. Onboard casino play should also contribute to future cruise offers, as evidenced by the regular postal mail and e-mail I receive inviting me back following my several thousand per-cruise coin-in on Video Poker.

Hold On to Your Chips

You don’t need to gamble or spend in land-based casinos to earn MGM statuses that offer comp cruises because spending on MGM credit cards, even outside MGM properties, contributes to tier status. Having both credit cards and maxing their limits through Blackjack play on BetMGM in PA and NJ, funded directly with the credit cards, I’ve almost requalified for Platinum status in March of 2026. 

Bonused spend, particularly 2x tier and comps or freeplay at grocery stores, can also reach MGM status levels, but with the option of BetMGM, I can focus my credit card spend online rather than incurring the opportunity cost of higher multipliers with other credit cards. For those without regular BetMGM access, other credit card spend can lead to Gold and even Platinum status.

Some things never change. Almost nobody stays in a complimentary or discounted hotel room. The last time I wrote about this for TravelZork was 2024, and not much has changed.

Before I dive into some of the numbers, I want to give a heads-up that, like all surveys, this uses a small sample size to approximate the average. Not every one of the 38.5 million visitors last year was surveyed. Consider the numbers a ballpark figure instead of an exact number.

62% Of Visitors Pay Advertised Room Rates

In 2025, more people paid the regular room rate in Las Vegas than in any of the previous five years. 62% of people paid whatever the advertised rate was on casino websites without using comps or OTA’s.

That’s a substantial increase from 2022, when only 50% of visitors were paying the regular rate. 

Last year, visitors who didn’t have a comp room or book a package deal paid $174.52 per night. That’s almost $4 less than in 2024, but $20 more than in 2022.

Even though 8% of all visitors were in Las Vegas for a convention, only 2% paid the convention rate. It might sound backwards, but convention rates are rarely discounted from advertised rates. Unless a room block is required for a convention, some companies will look elsewhere to save money. 

Only 13% Of Visitors Stayed In Complimentary Rooms

The fact that so few people stay in comp rooms always surprises TravelZork readers, who rarely pay for rooms. Last year, just 13% of all hotel guests in Las Vegas stayed in a comp room. 

This isn’t an anomaly, and it’s actually the average of the two previous years. It’s also an increase from 2021, when only 9% stayed in comp rooms. 

What surprises me the most is that only 7% book at the discount casino rates. Another 4% booked on other special rates. 

One of the best beginner perks from signing up for a casino rewards program is discounted hotel rooms. 90% of visitors last year have been to Las Vegas before, so they know the drill and decided not to book discounted rooms. However, 42% decided to book through an OTA.

Less Than Half The Visitors Went Downtown, The Lowest In Five Years 

Last year, only 42% of visitors went to downtown Las Vegas. That’s the lowest amount in five years. For comparison, 58% went downtown in 2022. 

Only 42% went downtown to see the Fremont Street Experience. This is way down from 2021, when 59% visited for that reason. 

14% of those who visited downtown were staying there. That’s up from 9% in 2021. 

12% visited downtown specifically to gamble. That’s up from 8% last year.

The reasons for not visiting downtown are the same I’ve heard from friends IRL and online. 37% had no interest in going, and another 31% said it’s either inconvenient or they didn’t have enough time. 

The reasons make sense when you see that 69% of all visitors stay at a hotel on the Vegas Strip. Not everyone wants to take the time to travel to and from downtown or other off-strip casinos during their visit that may only be a few days. 

If there’s a positive for downtown, it’s that 69% of Gen Z visitors went downtown. This is the youngest demographic tracked and could be a sign for a turnaround. “The kids” visitation downtown was much higher than that of the millennial geezers. Only 39% visited downtown.

Speaking of geezers. Gen X (my age) and boomers are no longer being surveyed by the LVCVA. Thoughts and prayers.

In addition to receiving a $300 statement credit with a booking (once per card per January through June and July through December), booking through FHR grants many benefits: “early noon check-in, if available,” a comp room upgrade when available, daily breakfast for two, a $100 food and beverage credit, and comp guaranteed 4 PM checkout. These benefits can easily exceed $200 in value for a single-night stay.

Stacking MGM Rewards

For even more value, Amex lets you add your MGM Rewards loyalty information to the booking, which may grant additional Tier Credits and MGM Rewards points and should stack with status benefits. Most notably, I’ve been receiving offers for daily BOGO Wicked Spoon Buffet thanks to my MGM Rewards Platinum status. MGM Gold status gets a BOGO buffet offer once per month. If staying at Cosmopolitan with FHR, I should almost certainly be able to charge the buffet to the room, and the $100 credit should cover it.

Other charges are likely to stack with the redemption of MyVegas rewards. If you redeem a $25 off $50 reward at Excalibur’s TAP, for example, you should be able to charge to your room at Cosmopolitan, and the $100 credit should cover the charge. I say “should” because in the past I was able to use room charge at any MGM property, and hopefully this $100 credit at Cosmopolitan isn’t limited to that property. If there are exclusions, the BOGO Wicked Spoon Buffet is still a good value, and you can use comps to cover charges at other restaurants. You may also be able to charge more than $100 and use comps to cover the remainder, talking to an agent at checkout.

Good Value

I like the Cosmopolitan’s location in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip. Other FHR options like Venetian, Wynn, and Fontainebleau are nice, but they’re distant from where I usually visit in Las Vegas. Wynn’s FHR benefit is also for the spa, which I don’t value highly.

At the time of article writing, I found numerous weekday rates around $300, which aligns well with the $300 FHR credit available on both the business and personal Platinum cards. May 20-21, for example, is $307.26 including taxes and fees. 

Sadly, the resort fee is not waived even after you enter your MGM Rewards information, but a desk agent may refund the resort fee for MGM Gold and Platinum members. In the past, an agent didn’t refund me, noting I booked through a third-party portal, but did offer me a discretionary $50 food comp.

Once again, we see more examples of saving money and finding value in Las Vegas, dispelling the myth that Las Vegas is expensive.

As always, gamble intelligently and use credit responsibly.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa: an OG luxury resort that still knows exactly where it is

When people talk about iconic major-brand luxury resorts in true destination markets, I always think about the old giants. The properties that were not just built to sell rooms, but to plant a flag. The kind of resort that was supposed to define a place for decades.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa absolutely belongs in that conversation.

This property opened in 1990 as the Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort and Spa, and even that original name tells you the ambition. This was not a side-project beach hotel. It was Hyatt doing a full-on island statement piece on Kauaʻi’s sunny South Shore. The official address remains 1571 Poipu Road, Koloa, and the resort still spreads across 50 oceanfront acres.

And that broader Hyatt context matters. Hyatt has never really played the own every beach in the world game at the same scale as the biggest hotel machines. Instead, it historically leaned on a more selective lineup of high-impact resorts and city flagships to do a lot of the brand’s prestige work. In Hawaii, that meant putting real chips on the table in a handful of meaningful markets: Hyatt Regency Waikiki, Hyatt Regency Maui, Grand Hyatt Kauai, and later Andaz Maui. Not endless quantity. More like curated big swings before curated became a marketing costume.

Architecturally, that ambition shows up fast.

The resort was designed by Wimberly Allison Tong and Goo, now WATG, and the whole thing leans into a classic Hawaiian language rather than generic tropical luxury. WATG describes the project as a classic Hawaiian resort of graceful grandeur, inspired by Kauaʻi’s trade winds, surf, and salt-laden air, with the buildings intentionally dispersed through the landscape rather than dropped as one giant slab on the shoreline. That choice is a huge part of why the place still feels dramatic without feeling oppressive.

The design details are where it gets really fun.

SAH Archipedia identifies the resort as a major revival of 1930s Hawaiian regional architecture, with materials including stucco, bronze, travertine, and marble, and with motifs that tie the property back to the island rather than letting it drift into anonymous luxury-hotel land. That is why so many of the details feel intentional: the bronzed botanical panels, the green tile roofline, the open atrium framing the ocean, the oversized lanterns, the carved wood details, the shell-like sconces, and the general feeling that someone actually wanted the resort to look Hawaiian, not just expensive.

That open-air framing move still hits hard today. The ocean axis through the central public spaces is one of the property’s strongest flexes. You are not just indoors, then outdoors. You are constantly being pulled through the architecture toward the landscape. Garden, courtyard, passage, ocean reveal. That is the choreography. And it is very effective. WATG’s own project notes make clear that this harmony with the island was part of the original design philosophy, not an accidental byproduct.

The property’s history also has a real resilience chapter.

The resort opened in 1990, then was tested early by Hurricane Iniki in 1992. That storm hit Kauaʻi hard, and the hotel became part of the island’s broader recovery story. So the history here is not just glamour and branding. There is also survival and rebuilding in the mix, which honestly gives the place a little more depth than the average luxury resort backstory.

Then came the big identity shift.

In 2005, Hyatt officially changed the name from Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort and Spa to Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa. That was not just a cosmetic rename. Hyatt said the move followed a multi-million-dollar renovation of the guestrooms and suites, meeting space, and public areas, and it also announced further investment in Anara Spa, including a new 5,000-square-foot garden treatment area and an expanded workout space. Travel trade coverage went even broader, describing the work as a renovation of all guest rooms, meeting spaces, and public areas. So yes, the Grand Hyatt badge came with actual substance behind it.

And that was not the only refresh cycle.

In 2010, the resort underwent a $45 million renovation project affecting 338 guestrooms, with completion expected that December. Later, in 2018, the resort refreshed its meeting spaces and added new function space, keeping the property current without throwing away its original architectural bones. In other words: this place did not just peak in 1990 and coast. It has kept evolving.

Even the club-lounge story has some lineage to it.

Today, guests know the Grand Club, but the club concept here appears to predate the Grand Hyatt era. Travel guides were already referring to Regency Club rooms at the old Hyatt Regency Kauai before the 2005 rebrand, which strongly suggests the lounge DNA was already in place before the name elevation. That tracks. Same resort identity, upgraded tailoring.

And the surrounding resort ecosystem only adds to the major statement property energy.

The current hotel still leans into the full resort playbook: ocean-view dining, acres of pools, championship golf, Anara Spa, cultural programming, and a strong South Shore location near Poʻipū. Hyatt’s own site highlights the award-winning multilevel pools and saltwater lagoon, while WATG’s project data underlines just how large the original concept really was: 600 keys, spa, tennis, golf, restaurants, lounges, retail, and major meeting and event space. This was built to be a complete world, not just a room inventory.

That is why Grand Hyatt Kauai still matters.

It is one of Hyatt’s true OG Hawaii trophy resorts. Opened as a Hyatt Regency in 1990, elevated to Grand Hyatt in 2005 after a meaningful property-wide renovation, and still compelling because it has managed to keep its old-Hawaiʻi soul while letting the guest product modernize around it.

In a travel world full of luxury properties that can feel weirdly interchangeable, this one still has identity.

Bougie, yes. Big-brand, yes. But also rooted. And that is the whole game.
