Whether through a joke or random conversation, Ron will be
remembered for always finding a way of putting a smile on the faces of
the people he crossed paths with. We, his family, will miss his humour
and hugs, and the racetrack horses will miss their regular feeds. Ron
deeply loved his family and was very proud of his children and
grandchildren. His greatest joy was sitting in the stands to watch their
many activities and events which he would happily travel to no matter
where they were.
He was also blessed with lifelong friends who he called family. More than
55 years of gatherings, camping, travelling and celebrations were
shared with them. They were there for him especially in his final years
and moments.
Though we are sad to see him go, we are grateful that his struggle is
over and can be at peace. His love and laughter will remain with us
always.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 13 th, at St.
Charles Catholic Church Hall, 17511 112 St. at 1:00 pm.

Gordon was born Monday, June 3, 1935 in Fredericton, York Co. He was the youngest son born to Blanche and Clarence O’Hara.

Gordon attended school in Fredericton and then later joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Ottawa at the age of 18.

After his distinguished career in the Air Force, he left to begin a new career path with the Provincial Government of Alberta. He arrived in Edmonton in the summer of 1968 and began working at the WWW Cross Cancer Institute, later joining Alberta Health Care and finishing his career with the Provincial Government Department of Social Services.

Gordon met and married Doreen Havercost in 1955 and later became the father of 3 daughters, Leslie Ducherer (Arthur), Deborah Wilson (Lance), and Kelly O’Hara (Lonnie). He was then blessed with six grandchildren, David, Darryl, Bradley, Keith, Michael, and Crystal, and seven great-grandchildren.

Later in life, Gordon met Arlin Peterson, and they were married in 2015. Life for them was filled with numerous cruises and travel experiences. At this time, Gordon welcomed two children into his life, Wendy Morrell (Murray) and Graham Peterson (Robbie), and the addition of four more grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, as well as a sister-in-law, Bonnie.

Gordon has joined Arlin, who passed away June 18, 2026, and they will be laid to rest at Red Willow Cemetery on November 1, 2026.

The family of Laraine Joy Dale is sad to announce her peaceful passing on September 14, 2026, following a long and resilient battle with Alzheimer’s dementia.

Laraine was born on May 14, 1944, in Eye, England, to Amy Lillian Warring (née Nunn), a war bride, and Herbert George Warring, a Royal Canadian Air Force Flight Lieutenant. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1946, where she would go on to build her life and career, working in administration for the Alberta Provincial Government.

Laraine enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including gardening, knitting, needlepoint, pottery, calligraphy, and other crafts. She also loved reading novels, working on crossword puzzles, bowling, and spending time with friends and family. It was often the simple pleasures that meant the most to her, particularly the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, sharing in the joy of all the little moments that made up their lives.

Alzheimer’s may have changed the later years of Laraine’s life, but it could never erase the laughter she shared, the love she gave, or the memories she created with those closest to her. She will be remembered not for the illness she endured, but for the woman she was — sweet, spirited, playful, and so very loved.

Laraine will be lovingly remembered by her sisters, Wendy Flynn and Lynda Warring; her sons, Corey (Jasmin) Dale and Steve (Tracy) Dale; her nephews, Jeremy Warring and John Warring; her seven grandchildren, Bobbi-Lynn, Christopher, Madison, Jackson, Charlize, Curtis and Conner; and her seven great-grandchildren, Vanessa, Brianna, Jocelyn, Quinton, Seth, Abby and Hannah.

She was predeceased by her parents, Amy Lillian Warring and Herbert George Warring; her brother, John Warring; her son, Vincent Dale; and her niece, Sharlee Warring.

In keeping with Laraine’s wishes, there will be no remembrance ceremony. She asked that those who knew her remember her in their own way and in their own time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ella Marie Nichols (nee Olson) on October 10, 2026 at the age of 73. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 52 years, Alan; her children, Patricia (Dwight) and Kristen (Troy); her grandchildren, Robert, Mikayla, Clara and Tessa; her siblings; Lesley (Donna), Joseph (Janet) and Lois; her sister-in-law Sandra and her brother-in-law Larry; and many other extended family members and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Lester and Evelyn; her brother, Douglas and her sister-in-law, Dorothy.

Ella was born on May 15, 1953 in Spalding, Saskatchewan where she grew up surrounded by family. She later met the love of her life, Alan and his career in the Canadian Armed Forces took them to various places across Canada where they raised their children. As a family they experienced the adventure of moving to new places and making homes along the way. Ella and Alan eventually settled in Gibbons, Alberta where they began the next chapter of their lives. Ella was a passionate early childhood educator who dedicated many years of her life to caring for and nurturing young children, including 30 years at St. Albert Daycare Society. Throughout her career, she touched the lives of many children and families.

Above all Ella was a devoted wife, mother, sister and nana whose family meant everything to her. She was always there for her family, willing to do anything for them at any time. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she showed her love for them through the time she spent with them and the special place they held in her life.

In her later years, Ella courageously battled Alzheimer’s disease. Throughout this time, her family members remained close by her side, surrounding her with love and care. Her passing marks the end of a difficult journey, but her family will hold close the memories of the woman she was and the many years of love, laughter and experiences they will always treasure. The family is deeply grateful to all the staff in the Spruce Avenue North section of the hospice unit at Gene Zwozdesky Centre Norwood for the exceptional care and compassion they showed Ella.

A celebration of Life for Ella will be held on November 8th from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at The Dew Drop Inn located at 4539-49 Street, Gibbons. Family and friends are welcome to drop in at any time to share memories and celebrate Ella’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society, if desired.

It is with deep sadness and love that we announce the passing of Peter Arla Horn, known to his family and friends as Arla, at the age of 71. Arla passed away peacefully in the Comfort Care Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, following many years of health challenges.

Before welcoming their children, he and Paula were avid squash and racquetball players. As their family grew, he enjoyed golfing and playing hockey with Drew and supporting Ashley’s love of horses. He was always there for his children, never missing a game and taking pride in their pursuits. His steady presence and unwavering support will be among the memories they treasure most.

Arla will also be remembered for his quick wit, dry sense of humour, and perfectly timed sarcasm. His humour and the moments shared with him will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by those who loved him.

Arla will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Paula; his son, Drew, and daughter-in-law, Taylor, and their children, Wesley and Madilynn; his daughter, Ashley, and her partner, Cody, and their son, Carter; and his brother, Joe.

His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and all those who knew and loved him.

A celebration of Arla’s life will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Diabetes Canada.

Bill was a remarkably enlivening individual, with a smile that lit up every room. He was a lover of family, music, films, sports, and lifelong learning. Bill engaged with the world straight up and was always a positive, optimistic presence. He was accomplished, in turn, a saxophone player, an Edmonton Fireman (Acting Deputy Fire Chief), a successful university student (PhD), and a dedicated professor at Grant McEwan University. Bill will be remembered by those who knew him as someone who had a sparkling sense of humour with a real joy of life and living.

Bill is survived by his son Sean (Tanisha Patterson) McGarvey, sister Margaret (Dean) Befus, brother Robert (Sandy Bromley) McGarvey, as well as nieces and nephews, Lindsay (John) Milville, Dillion Befus, Julia (Jordan Smith) McGarvey, Oliver (Isabella Blatter) McGarvey, and grandnephew Michael Milville, grandnieces Megan Milville and Norah McGarvey. Bill was Uncle at Large to Conrad Steele (Crystal) for 46 years, and grand-uncle to his children, Madison, Lance and Aubrey. The family sends special thanks to Lee Felgate for her love and caring for Bill over the last ten years.

Although he will be deeply missed, his passing was, like his life, lived on his terms – in the way he would have wanted it.

The family of Geneva Berwick is sad to announce her peaceful passing on August 22nd at the age of 99. She was 47 days short of her 100th birthday and, sadly, approximately 3 weeks short of meeting her first Great Grandchild from the date of her passing. Geneva was born to Alma and Harold Nelson and was raised in Clyde. She worked at a hardware store in Clyde for one of her many uncles, where she met local residents and farmers in the area. She married her longtime schoolmate Jim Berwick in 1949 after he returned from service in WWII. After living in Edmonton for a couple of years, Jim bought a farm just South of Clyde, where they would move to and raise their two sons, Ian and Kevin. Geneva was a dedicated farm wife and mother. She enjoyed baking all types of pastries and was an avid gardener who always took great pride in her home and yard on the farm. Geneva and Jim enjoyed attending Club 200 dances in the Westlock area, where they became lifelong friends with other people in the community. Geneva and Jim moved to the town of Westlock in 1981, where Geneva continuously developed her yard in town, which brought her great joy throughout the years. Geneva and Jim became involved in the growth and surge of the Reform Party of Canada in the early 1990’s. This introduced them to other like-minded individuals and lifelong friends in the Westlock area, including attending political party conferences in Ottawa and parts of Western Canada. After the passing of her husband, Jim, in 2017, Geneva later moved to St. Albert until her passing.

The family would like to thank the staff of Chartwell Retirement in St.Albert for their support and dedication of care throughout the past eight years. Special thanks to ExquisiCare Senior Living at Cameron Heights in Edmonton for their professionalism and superb care and environment during the last weeks of Geneva’s life.

Geneva was predeceased by her parents Harold and Alma, sister Margret Lux, stepfather Walter Lux, and her husband Jim.

Geneva was survived by her son Ian(Donna), their children Chris(Amanda), Scott(Karen), and Nicole(Peytlen), and along with son Kevin(Shelley), their children Alissa and Jenna. She was also survived by her three brothers, Ray Nelson, Ron Nelson, and Warren Lux.

As requested, there will be no service.

It is with profound sadness we announce the unexpected passing of Lea (Inkeri) Halinen on Saturday, August 29th, 2026, at the age of 81.

Inkeri was born on January 14, 1945, in Outokumpu, Finland. She immigrated to Canada at the age of six with her father, mother, brother, and sister. In 1963, she began studying at the University of Alberta and graduated third in her class with honours from the Faculty of Medicine in 1969. She had never considered a career path other than medicine. It simply felt natural to her, as though that’s what she was made to do.

In 1975, after five years practicing as a locum doctor in Canada and abroad, Inkeri settled in Manning, Alberta. She married in 1978 and welcomed her only child, a son, later that year. Dr. Halinen served as the Chief of Staff at the Manning Hospital until 1997, when she relocated to Edmonton and continued her work as an MD until 2019. She had a passion for medicine and caring for people that extended easily and naturally to everyone she met.

Inki had a passion and talent for quilting, and created true works of art with fabric. She liked the idea that her quilts provided their recipients warmth and comfort. She enjoyed experiencing the world and travelled through the US, Europe, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam, and India. Reading was very important to her, and she had a lifelong desire to learn. She became extremely well-versed in health, wellness, and spirituality. 

Helping others was the main focus of her life. She spent considerable time volunteering with the Edmonton Food Bank and various other charitable organizations. She also taught adult literacy for the last several years of her life. 

She had the warmest spirit, an easy, joyful laugh, and sincerely extended love, compassion, and understanding to everyone she met.

Inkeri is lovingly remembered by her son Colin (Nikki), sister Kirsti, eight nieces and nephews, and numerous close, wonderful friends.

A celebration of life will be held on September 12th at 2pm at Southminster-Steinhauer United Church (10740 19 Ave. NW, Edmonton, AB). Everyone is welcome and encouraged to wear bright colours.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Edmonton Food Bank or PALS (Project Adult Literacy Society).

Canadian Materials Engineering Visionary

Al was a true innovator, born in Calgary, Alberta, but lived most of his life in Edmonton. He is predeceased by his parents, Julia (Overland), in 1989, and Arthur, in 1991, and beloved family dog Brutus, who no doubt was waiting with his tennis ball for him. Albert leaves behind his only sister, Alane (Glen). Cousins Kevin Overland in Saskatchewan, Todd and Mike McAlary in Ontario, and extended family in Norway, Canada, England, and the USA.

Albert came from a family of makers and artists. His Dad, Arthur, in his early years a Photographer with the R.C.A.F. & Calgary Herald. Julie, a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Alane, a Scandinavian-style artist. So, it’s no surprise that from a very early age, Albert was extremely good at envisioning designs and then building them!

As a young boy, the minute Al got home from pre-school, he raced into his room to work on his latest Lego project, surprising our parents with his early creative skills. In his teens, Al excelled in downhill and slalom water skiing, competing at local tournaments against the likes of Vern Oberg at Wizard and the Bailey brothers at Pigeon Lake. We had great memories in Sicamous, B.C., where the family spent many summers in Dad’s handmade Ski boat (350 Chev). I think we were all a little deaf from that engine noise!

Al was good enough to qualify for both the Alberta ski teams (downhill and water). But Mum and Dad wanted him to attend University. So, after graduating from Harry Ainlay Senior High School in 1979, Al decided on the Materials Engineering Technology program at N.A.I.T graduating in 1982.

After graduation, he did a little autobody work in our garage in Aspen Gardens. It was around this time he decided to cut apart his new waterski to see how it was made, much to Dad’s displeasure. It was shortly after that time when Concept Water Skis was born, which led him to making small trick skis for the young Llewellyn brothers in the 1990s.

Al built the first carbon fiber bike frame for Rocky Mountain bikes and carbon-inlayed crank arms for RaceFace. Then fiberglass bike wheels for the Silver medal-winning Canadian National Cycling Team in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Then he designed and manufactured award-winning ultra-light gyrocopters & rotor blades, winning the Best Engineered Award for Oshkosh 1990. Heck, Al even made one of the first Carbon Fiber hockey sticks! Sadly, the local funding that was promised to manufacture the sticks never came to be. This was his greatest disappointment.

So, it was back to aviation, with Al working closely with David Marsden P.Eng on aerodynamic projects, and also Chris of Falconar Avia at Blatchford Hangar 11. He also used his skills building drones and wind turbine blades. And even the giant balls you still see on Jasper Avenue and the Remedy café, which are to this day known as Al’s big balls!

Throughout the entirety of his career, Al was a one-man show, preferring to work on his own. Relying heavily on grants from both the Alberta & National Research Council of Canada. These grants led to work with other Olympians, like Jeff Hamilton, a world record holder as the fastest downhill skier. On Jeff’s new adventure, he used Al’s carbon fiber bike wheel, this time racing bikes downhill, at speeds well exceeding 100mph.

He applied his Materials Engineering skills to the groundbreaking “Goose Egg” (DCLR8). A back of the helmet carbon fiber egg-like add-on, designed to protect the vulnerable back of sports helmets from hard impacts. This “egg” achieved an unheard-of 70% reduction in impact forces. Albert worked closely with Tec Edmonton, UA Solve, and the UofA Mechanical Engineering department. He holds both U.S. and Canadian patents for this device. Al never let go of his dream to help reduce concussions in sports.

Al was well known in the industry across North America as the go-to guy if you wanted it made right. So, it’s no surprise he made a carbon fiber sit-ski for Olympian Derek Zaplotinsky, a Para-Nordic skier for the PyeongChang Seoul Olympics in 2018. Then came the Cult favorite, his carbon fiber toilet seats, which he shipped worldwide. Even comedian Jay Leno has one! “A little fiber goes a long way”!

Al also worked on vintage Formula One-style race cars and building and repairing carbon fiber parts for custom cars. In the last years of his life, he dedicated much of his time to repairing carbon fiber bicycles for local bike shops.

When Al first began his struggle with severe Thrombocytopenia several years ago, he became concerned with his legacy. He wanted the next generation of builders to dream big like he did. It was back then that he made his wishes clear about how he wanted to be remembered.

In the last month of his life, his condition worsened, developing quickly into Mixed-Phenotype Acute Leukemia (MPAL). We are extremely grateful to the UofA Hospital, for their unmatched kindness and compassion, through some of the toughest days of his life.

Al, or as he’s more affectionately known, Stoney, was a great storyteller. He seemed to know everyone, and always had a tall tale to tell. My brother was indeed a true innovator, ahead of his time. But to me, it was his tender heart for animals that revealed his true inner spirit. So it’s only fitting that if you wish to make a donation in his name, please consider a local animal shelter.

We would also like to thank the County Quilters Guild in Spruce Grove for their memorable quilt, which I will long treasure.

Celebration of Life will take place high on the tops of the Rocky Mountains! Now it’s time to Ski the clouds, Stoney!
