Dewey & LeBoeuf is making its long-awaited debut in Dubai after securing the hire of two partners from US rival Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld. The two Dubai-based partners leaving Akin Gump are local office head Gavin Watson and banking partner Chris Sioufi, who joined last year from DLA Piper.

Post-merger Dewey promotes 18 new partners

Dewey & LeBoeuf has announced its partner promotions for the year, with the firm making up 18 associates, including four in the City. New York receives five new partners, the most of any office, while Washington DC gains three. The firm's branches in Moscow, Warsaw, Almaty, Milan and Texas each gain one new partner apiece.

Disputes body appoints youngest-ever arbitrator

Dewey & LeBoeuf associate Sabine Konrad has become the youngest-ever arbitrator to be appointed to World Bank-affiliated investment disputes panel the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Konrad, 33, is an associate in the newly-merged firm's Paris office and joins the ICSID panel of arbitrators alongside Dewey's London international dispute resolution co-head, Arthur Marriott. Marriott currently holds the post of conciliator on the panel.

LeBoeuf launches HK arm as Asia bridgehead

LeBoeuf Lamb Greene & MacRae has launched a new office in Hong Kong, with the practice set to serve as the US law firm's regional hub for Asia. The branch officially launched on Tuesday (4 September) but has been practising since receiving its license in July.

Simmons and LeBoeuf cook up $700m oil deal

Simmons & Simmons and LeBoeuf Lamb Greene & MacRae have taken the lead advisory roles on Shell's sale of an oil refinery in the south of France for $700m (£345m). Simmons took the lead for Shell under corporate partner Paul Exley as the fuels giant moves to sell its Berre l'Etang refinery to petrochemical group Basell. LeBoeuf advised Basell, led by Paris corporate partner Stephen Walters alongside London competition partner Peter Crowther and environmental partners Paul Watchman and Nicholas Rock.

US firms resist Weil-style pay hikes as salary market begins to fragment

O'Melveny & Myers, LeBoeuf Lamb Greene & MacRae and Hogan & Hartson have set their London associate salary rates, with the firms holding fast against the increases announced at Weil Gotshal & Manges last week. All three have remained in line with the mid-Atlantic newly-qualified rates set by White & Case (£76,000) and Shearman & Sterling (£75,000) earlier this year.

If there is one theme emerging from the figures for US firms' London outposts in 2006, it is just how divergent this amorphous group has become - particularly the more established players. On paper, 2006 should have been a great year: markets booming, M&A activity up and UK firms of all sizes mostly announcing record results.
