As you may or may not know, I am parent of a child with autism. Our oldest son has high-functioning autism (Asperger’s) and ADHD, and yes, we DO have the shirt you see above literally in our house. I know there’s lots of Homeschool Parents out there, and also Parents of Kiddos with Autism. I want to share a letter and an amazing giveaway with you. I’ve done something like this before in the past, and it’s something we all need to hear again!

Dear Homeschool Mom (or Dad) of a Child with Autism,

First and foremost, I want you to know that you are doing a GREAT JOB. Has anyone ever told you that before? I want you to never forget this — you are doing a great job. You are an awesome parent.

However, I know you are tired. I know there are many tears, much pain, and many struggles. I know, because I live the autism life too. I feel the fear, the worry, and the looks of other parents who do not know the daily struggles. I know the loneliness you sometimes feel even when you are surrounded by people, and the constant worry for your child’s future and your child’s dreams. Will your child ever have a job? Will they live at home with you? What happens to them after you’re gone? I know the many worries you have!

You’ve made the decision to homeschool your unique child who is a gift from God… a child with many special gifts, and you should be proud of your decision. You are going the extra mile for your child, and remember – you are doing a great job. Please don’t worry about what others think of you. You are doing what you believe is best for your child, and you are awesome. I am so proud of you.

Take each day one day at a time. Pray, pray, and pray some more.

Mom (or Dad) of a Child with Autism — You are doing your best, and yes, that is enough. You are a great parent, and I want you to never forget that!

Embracing the Teenage Years
First, let’s address the elephant in the room: teenagers can be moody, opinionated, and fiercely independent. But isn’t that part of what makes this stage so special? They’re discovering who they are, exploring their passions, and challenging the status quo. Homeschooling allows us to support their growth in a personalized and flexible way, tailoring their education to their unique needs and interests.

One of the greatest advantages of homeschooling teens is the ability to foster deep conversations. As they grapple with big questions about life, faith, careers, and relationships, you’re there to guide them. Take the time to listen to their thoughts, even when they differ from your own. These discussions build trust and strengthen your bond, which is invaluable during these formative years. Take the time to listen to your teens. To REALLY listen and then respond to what they are saying.

Structuring for Success
Teenagers thrive on structure, but they also need room to spread their wings. Finding the right balance is key. Work with your teen to create a schedule that incorporates academics, extracurricular activities, and downtime. Encourage them to take ownership of their learning by setting goals and managing their time.

High school-level homeschooling often comes with added responsibilities like planning for college, tracking credits, and preparing transcripts. Don’t be afraid to seek out resources to help you stay organized. There are many wonderful templates, apps, and homeschooling communities that can provide support and guidance.

Managing Challenges
Let’s be real: homeschooling teens isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. You might face resistance, burnout, or self-doubt along the way. When resistance crops up, try to uncover the root cause. Are they feeling overwhelmed? Bored? Disconnected? Open communication and a willingness to adapt can make all the difference.

Burnout is another common struggle—for both teens and moms. If you’re feeling stretched thin, give yourself permission to take a break. A day off to recharge or try something new can reignite your passion for homeschooling. Remember, learning happens in many forms, not just at a desk. A family hike, a visit to a museum, or a baking session can be just as educational as a math lesson.

Celebrating Wins
Amid the challenges, don’t forget to celebrate the victories—big and small. Did your teen master a difficult concept in algebra? Ace their first presentation? Volunteer for a cause they care about? These moments are worth acknowledging. Celebrating successes fosters confidence and motivates them to keep pushing forward.

Homeschooling can sometimes feel isolating, but it doesn’t have to be. Connect with other homeschooling families in your area or online. A support network can provide encouragement, share resources, and remind you that you’re not alone. Many communities offer co-ops, sports teams, and social groups specifically for homeschooled teens, giving them opportunities to connect with peers and develop friendships.

As you navigate homeschooling your teen, remember that you’re doing an incredible job!
