One of the ways to earn points, miles and/or cashback on your everyday spend is to link your payment card(s) to dining programs that offer rewards. When paying for meals at participating restaurants with one of those linked cards, you earn bonus rewards through that dining program. Once you’ve registered and linked your card(s), this is therefore an easy way to rack up rewards with no further thought being needed.

Many of these programs offer additional bonus rewards when first signing up provided you spend a certain amount for your first transaction and subsequently write a review. Some of them then offer even more ways in which to earn bonus points from hitting earning thresholds to writing further reviews and more.

One of the useful things with the spending requirements is that they include tax and tip. That means that, for example, a signup bonus requiring $25 of spend could be hit when ordering an $18 meal and paying $7 in tax and tip.

Something important to be aware of is that the majority of these dining programs are administered by Rewards Network and they don’t let you double dip. That means that you can’t register the same card with, say, the dining programs for American Airlines, United, Delta and Bilt in order to earn miles/points with each of them. If you register a card with Program B that was already registered with Program A, it’ll be removed from Program A and registered with the new one instead.

Also be aware that the various Rewards Network dining programs sometimes increase their signup bonuses. It might therefore make sense to hold off on joining a new dining program until there’s an increased offer.

Earnings on dining spend

Regardless of whether or not you earn a bonus for signing up, you will be rewarded for your spend at participating restaurants.

For most of these programs, the number of miles/points you earn per dollar of spend will depend on how many times you’ve eaten at a participating restaurant during the current calendar year and whether or not you’re opted into their emails. The more frequently you use the program, the higher your earnings per dollar spent will be. This is a feature of most of the programs administered by Rewards Network. Once you’ve earned the higher status level, it’s valid through the next full calendar year.

Note that for some of these programs, at the lowest level you’ll only earn the specified rate per $2 of spend rather than per $1. I’ve highlighted those in bold, but it makes sense to at least sign up for emails to earn at a higher rate.

Which dining program is the most rewarding?

With so many dining programs available and very few opportunities to earn with more than one of them by stacking, which program is the best one to use on a day-to-day basis?

For most people, that’ll be a decision that’ll be highly personalized. Someone who’s shooting for status with American Airlines might prefer the AAdvantage dining program due to the ability to earn Loyalty Points in addition to AAdvantage miles. Someone who’s trying to earn a Companion Pass might opt for Southwest’s program. If you’re wanting to earn status with Bilt in order to be eligible for higher transfer bonuses on Rent Days, Bilt Dining could be your best choice. If you’re highly invested in the American Express Membership Rewards ecosystem, you might prefer to focus on Rakuten Dining in order to earn 5x points. For anyone preferring cashback and who’s also a T-Mobile customer, earning 5% cashback six days a week and 10% on Tuesdays will be an attractive proposition.

To try to quantify value though, I thought it’d be helpful to calculate potential earnings. This has been done by taking earning rates and multiplying it by the Reasonable Redemption Value for that program.

Signup Bonus

This first table displays the value that can be earned from the new member bonus for each program.

As you can see, Marriott is far and away the winner of this category, although there is a bit of a caveat. That’s because at the time of publishing this post Marriott is offering a three-tiered welcome bonus. You earn 1,000 bonus points after your first transaction (and writing a review) within 60 days of joining, then you get another 2,000 bonus points for your second transaction (and review) within the first 60 days, then a further 3,000 bonus points for your third transaction (and review) within those first 60 days. If you can max that out within your first couple of months of joining, that’s easily the most rewarding welcome bonus.

Wyndham’s dining program is next which is due to a limited time increase in its signup bonus from 500 points to 2,000.

Other than Marriott and that increased Wyndham bonus, I was surprised to see that it was Delta with the next strongest offer; that’s because it’s offering double the number of miles that the other airline programs enable you to earn.

Earnings with VIP status (where applicable)

This next table displays the effective percentage return you’ll get with nearly all of the programs if you have VIP status which is the level you’d earn from your 12th transaction onwards in a calendar year.

As you can see, the top earner is T-Mobile on Tuesdays. Other than that, earning 5x Membership Rewards via Rakuten Dining is the best value option (based on RRV), closely followed by Alaska Airlines, American Airlines and then United.

That said, the value for Seated is based on the default 5% earning rate; it’s possible to earn up to 30% cashback at some restaurants. Similarly, the base rate for Franki based on my limited searches is 5%, but at most locations it seems to be 11% or 15% cashback.

Earnings with Select status (where applicable)

It takes 11 transactions before you’ll start earning at that higher VIP rate though. As a result, the table below displays earnings based on Select status where applicable. That’s the status many of these programs offer for simply opting in to emails.

Once again, the top earner is T-Mobile’s dining program, but only on a Tuesday. Also once again, the second best earner is Rakuten, with a fairly sizeable gap before the next entry of T-Mobile on non-Tuesdays. Bilt places fourth, but only if the restaurant you dine at earns 3x rather than 2x. Otherwise, those with any kind of Marriott status can earn a decent return that slightly exceeds Alaska earnings. Again though, that’s all based on our Reasonable Redemption Rates, so your valuations might be different.

As with the VIP rate calculations, the value for Seated is based on the default 5% earning rate; it’s possible to earn up to 30% cashback at some restaurants. Likewise, Franki’s default earning rate is 5%, but it seems like you can more commonly expect to earn 11% or 15% cashback.

Example earnings in a year – Welcome bonus + 5 transactions of $30

As you can see, the value you can get from these dining programs can vary widely depending on if you’re only considering the welcome bonus or only looking at one type of earning rate.

A more realistic approach might be to consider the earnings you could earn over the course of a year if you only focus on one dining program. This next table takes a fairly conservative approach as it assumes you earn the signup bonus and eat at five restaurants during the calendar year and spend exactly $30 each time. That wouldn’t be enough for VIP status, so these are calculated based on Select status (where applicable).

Marriott is once again the big winner, regardless of whether you have status in the Bonvoy program or not. Next up is Wyndham—largely due to the limited time signup bonus increase—and then Seated which is based on the 5% earning rate; you might be able to do much better than that depending on the increased rates near you.

Other than that, there’s not much in it for most of the travel-related programs, so someone chasing status might prefer American, Alaska, or Southwest.

Example earnings in a year – Welcome bonus + 20 transactions of $30

I thought it’d also be worth running a scenario based on someone who eats out a little more frequently at participating restaurants. In this instance, they dine at eligible restaurants a total of 20 times in a calendar year, spending $30 each time. The calculations are therefore based on the Select earning rate for the first 11 transactions, then the VIP rate for the remaining 9 transactions.

Does that make much of a difference? Let’s take a look:

Things are a little closer this time. Marriott’s Eat Around Town program wins out again courtesy of its superior signup bonus. However, it’s closely followed by Southwest and the reason for that is due to the additional bonuses you can earn with that program. You earn 500 bonus Rapid Rewards points after earning 1,500 points through dining spend and reviews (not including the signup bonus) which can be earned one time, as well as an additional 300 bonus points for every 1,000 points you earn through spend and reviews. This scenario of 20 transactions of $30 each therefore earns a total of 800 bonus points as it would earn you 1,800 points through spend (20 * $30 * 3). However, do note that the 500 bonus points can only be earned one time, so this equation only works in the first year. You will still earn 300 bonus points for every 1,000 points earned in the future though.

T-Mobile Dining also isn’t too far behind, but only if you only eat at participating restaurants on Tuesdays.

Rakuten does well despite its lack of a signup bonus thanks to its strong earning rate of 5x Membership Rewards. After that, it’s fairly close between Alaska, American, Delta, and United in terms of travel dining programs, with Seated in the mix too. Again, Seated could be even more rewarding than that because our calculations are based on a 5% earning rate rather than the up to 30% that’s sometimes available. Franki could well be a contender too give the 11% and 15% earning rates often available, rather than the 5% rate we’ve used for calculations seeing as that’s sometimes earned.

It’s interesting seeing Marriott winning out because the rest of the hotel dining programs ended up looking pretty weak overall.

Card-linked dining program tips & tricks

Those are all the ways that you can earn bonus miles, points or cashback directly from the various dining programs, but there are also numerous other ways to maximize these transactions. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but here are various tips and tricks to help you earn and save as much as possible.

Make multiple cheap purchases to quickly earn VIP status

Most of these programs offer an increased VIP earning rate once you’ve completed 11 transactions in a calendar year. A quick way to get there would be to make several cheap purchases in different transactions, perhaps over different days. You’d therefore earn at the lower Select rate for those initial low cost transactions, thereby ensuring that your more expensive dining later on will earn at the VIP rate.

For example, at the time of writing this Moe’s Southwest Grill is available in some locations. I imagine they have menu items for $2 or less, so you could rack up 11 transactions for ~$20. If you were to do that in January, you’d have VIP status for the rest of that year and all of the next year which could be well worth that initial ~$20 investment, especially for those who eat out frequently and/or spend a lot when doing so.

Something important to bear in mind with this approach is that if you’ve just joined a dining program, you’ll still want to spend enough in a single transaction to earn the welcome bonus. For some programs that’s $25; for others it’s $30. That purchase doesn’t necessarily have to be your very first purchase in the program, it just has to happen in the first 30 days of joining (or 60 days for Marriott’s offer at the time of publishing this).

Card-linked spending offers

There are often Amex Offers, Citi Offers, Chase Offers, etc. for both restaurant chains and local restaurants. Sometimes those locations are eligible restaurants in these dining programs, so you can save while earning.

Update: TonyBank and Kyle have shared in the comments that Citi Offers also use Rewards Network. That unfortunately means that those won’t stack with Rewards Network dining programs for airlines and hotels.

Dining credits

Some Amex cards (such as the Amex Gold card and select Delta cards) have a benefit for Resy which offer a statement credit when dining at a restaurant on Resy’s list. Similarly, personal Chase Sapphire Reserve cards have a twice-annual credit for Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables dining establishments.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some kind of overlap between these restaurants and those that participate in the dining programs listed above. If so, you can earn miles/points/cashback through the dining program while earning statement credits on your credit card.

Pay with a card that earns more on dining

Seeing as you’ll be paying the restaurant directly, it’s worth paying with a card that earns more for dining purchases. Alternatively, it could make sense to use a card where you’re working on the minimum spend requirement towards a credit card welcome offer.

Take advantage of bonus card deals

Leading up to the holidays, as well as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, restaurant chains often offer bonus cards when buying one of their gift cards. For example, you might buy a $30 Moe’s Southwest Grill gift card and get a $10 bonus card which is valid for a period of a couple of months.

If the stars align and a restaurant on a dining program runs one of those kinds of deals, you could buy a gift card with one of your linked cards to get a qualifying dining program transaction, while also earning a bonus card for future use.

Be aware that online gift card purchases are unlikely to work if payment is processed by a third party like CashStar.

Link new credit cards to your dining program(s) of choice

When you get a new credit card, if you’ll be trying to hit the minimum spending requirement through everyday spend, it’s worth remembering to add it to a dining program so that you don’t miss out on bonus points/miles/cashback that you’d otherwise have been able to earn.

Focus on a different dining program in turn

As we saw in an earlier section, one of the main ways to get value from these dining programs is by earning bonus rewards from their signup bonuses. For some people, the optimal approach will therefore be to pick a program when it’s offering an increased offer, then move on to a different program when that’s increased its bonus. You could do this for your partner’s loyalty program accounts too so that you can double up on each program’s bonus. Bear in mind that you can only earn a bonus once per program, so it’s worth timing it for when there’s one of those increased offers.

This approach won’t always make sense though. For example, for someone whose focus is on earning status with an airline like American Airlines, it could be better to dedicated their card-linked dining spend in the AAdvantage Dining program in order to earn both redeemable miles and Loyalty Points.

When my family decided to pursue JetBlue’s 25 for 25 challenge last year, it wasn’t entirely sensible. Sure, we’d earn a lot of points, but there was no way to know for sure whether we’d glean long-term value from 25 years of Mosaic 1 elite status. It was a gamble that I felt pretty good about, but the upside was really hard to quantify speculatively.

But this week, it really paid off for the first time since the completion of the challenge.

Yesterday, we flew as a party of 5 (my immediate family plus an additional family member on our itinerary) + a party of 2 (on a separate reservation) from Boston to San Francisco. On an unrelated side note, all seven of us enjoyed breakfast in the Sapphire Lounge. That was thanks to the Ritz-Carlton card, which no longer allows for unlimited free guests, but still allows for free authorized users, so it was easy to get the whole family into the lounge.

Here’s the part where our Mosaic 1 status really came in handy: JetBlue wanted $169 per passenger for Even More Space (extra legroom) seats prior to the trip. For the 5 of us on a single reservation, that would have been $845 in fees for extra legroom seats (on top of the cost of the tickets themselves). We wouldn’t have paid that. However, thanks to Mosaic 1 status, we didn’t need to — we got the seats for free at check-in. Given the long nature of the flight (scheduled for 6 hours and 45 minutes), free extra legroom was, well, huge. It wasn’t the same as a lie-flat seat, but we had plenty of room to stretch our legs (and thanks to JetBlue charging so much for these seats, the extra legroom section didn’t go out full, so I ended up in a row with a family member where we enjoyed an empty middle seat, making the experience feel that much less cramped). Getting that kind of unexpected win in Year #1 is precisely why I thought we should pursue the promotion. I’m certainly glad that we went after it!

And while I love collecting points to enjoy lie-flat business class seats on long-haul trips, after flying the 6hr and 45min transcon trip yesterday, I could see myself considering a JetBlue economy class redemption from Europe to the US if the play is to get us all in Even More Space seats on a daytime flight home. I don’t know whether I’ll ever take advantage of that, but I love having it as an option thanks to pursuing long-term status. Here’s hoping the status sticks around if and when JetBlue is acquired.

3x travel: Ink Preferred as an alternative to Sapphire Reserve

Don’t really care about United Airlines specifically? In that case, you might be wondering which credit card to use for travel now that the Sapphire Reserve no longer offers 3X on all travel. Greg points out in this post that it is still possible to earn 3X Ultimate Rewards points on all travel with the Business Preferred card while making the case for why he has moved his travel purchases to this card. Personally, I’ve been using the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve for most travel, but I hadn’t realized until very recently that the Altitude Reserve card’s trip cancellation protection doesn’t offer any coverage for lodging. I’ll continue to pay award taxes & fees with a Chase Sapphire Reserve or Ritz card in many cases, though the Bilt Palladium card, which we’re using to earn 3X everywhere in my household, might be our next solution.

Another option for a “travel” sort of card would be the Citi Strata Premier card. The Citi Strata Premier might be the ultimate “Player 2” card. It bonuses many of the most commonly used categories, like gas, grocery, and dining. It also offers 3X on many types of travel (though not everything) and has some travel protections (that seem a bit weaker than other cards, but might suit one’s needs). However, rumor has it that Citi is contemplating a refresh on the card that would make it far more complicated. It isn’t hard to imagine Citi couponifying the card, but hopefully, they won’t mess with the earning structure nearly so much as has been rumored.

Don’t sleep on Southwest cardholder discount codes — and don’t misuse them, either

While I wouldn’t necessarily use the Southwest cards to book travel, the Premier consumer and business cards come with what could be a highly valuable benefit: a coupon code that defies expectations. The moral of the story is that you don’t want to waste the right Southwest code on a paid fare when you can get significantly more value out of it against an award flight. This can be a handy way to increase the purchasing power/value of your points, and could make the Premier cards the best choice for those who can take advantage of the codes (particularly if you travel with multiple passengers).

My American Express bonuses are posting with blazing speed

We’ve recently earned a few different types of Amex bonuses in my household, including an Amex Offer spending bonus, an American Express Membership Rewards welcome bonus, and a co-branded Hilton bonus that included both points and a free night certificate. In all three cases, I was highly impressed with the fact that points posted with blazing speed – anywhere from the same day to fewer than 48 hours from meeting spending requirements. That could be awesome if you need the rewards from a bonus right away. On the other hand, as a reader points out in the comments, if you want to stretch out the length of time you have to use something like a welcome bonus free night certificate, you may want to hold off on meeting that spending requirement for a while, because the free night certificate might post more quickly than you anticipated.

I’m not into NASCAR, but this could be a fun opportunity for someone who is.

We’ve tried looking into what cash pricing would be for an experience like this at a couple of races, but have never been able to find something directly comparable. These experiences are set up as auctions, and currently, they all have at least one bid. I’ve seen Choice Experiences go for the starting bid, or close to it, multiple times. So, if you’re a NASCAR fan, this could be something worth “gearing up” for.

Early this week, Amazon announced that it would be moving its Business card from American Express to US Bank. Current Amex cardholders will be automatically moved to the new US Bank Mastercard on August 14th.

Here’s the text that current cardholders received announcing the change:

We’re reaching out to let you know that American Express’ U.S. Small Business co-brand Card relationship with Amazon is ending. Your Amazon Business or Amazon Business Prime Card will be replaced with an Amazon co-branded credit card issued by U.S. Bank. We expect that this will take place on August 14, 2026.

Quick Thoughts

The earning details on the card will remain the same, with Prime members getting 5% back on Amazon purchases, compared to 3% for non-Prime members. The only difference is that the current Amex limits those rates to $120k in purchases per year; the new US Bank card will increase that to $150k per year.

For current cardholders, this could come with a few benefits outside of that increased purchase limit:

• Amex limits each customer to 5 open credit cards at any time. Folks who are currently maxed out will get another spot without having to cancel a card.
• Current cardholders can pre-emptively cancel before August 14th and reapply with US Bank to receive a new welcome offer.
• Like Amex, US Bank business cards don’t report to credit agencies, so they won’t count towards your Chase 5/24 count.

We don’t yet know what will happen to current credit limits, which could be a concern for resellers. We also don’t know whether or not the current card’s return protection will carry over to the new card. If those remain the same, this should be good news for folks who are shut down or maxed out with Amex, or for those who are running into that $120k/year max.

Yesterday, United made significant changes to its Mileage Plus program that drastically alter how its customers earn and redeem miles. Essentially, everything can be summed up by saying that the airline really, really wants its customers to have a United credit card. It’s making its program more rewarding for those who do and penalizing those who don’t. Fittingly, there are now improved welcome offers available on the Chase United Airlines Quest and Club cards.

The Club card offers more miles: 100,000 miles after $5,000 in spend. If you value the United Club access that comes with it, that’s a decent deal. If not, the 90,000-mile offer on the United Quest card, with a $345 lower first-year annual fee, may be more appealing. Both include 3,000 Premier Qualifying Points (PQP), which brings you halfway to Premier Silver status.

Both of these offers are 10,000 miles better than the previous public version, and should be available soon via referral. You can also earn an additional 10K miles on either card when you add an authorized user within the first three months of card membership.

Quick Thoughts

United has essentially made having a credit card obligatory if you engage with the program in any significant way. Cardholders earn 3 additional miles per dollar on flights, regardless of elite status, get 10-15% off award prices, and see significantly more award availability. In fact, Greg searched Newark to London, and for the day he searched, he found business class saver award space on 6 of 7 flights. His wife, who isn’t a cardholder, found none. Earning miles while flying basic economy is now only possible if you hold a credit card. United is going all in to ensure as many of its customers as possible have a Mileage Plus credit card.

Both of these offers are good for the respective cards, if not the best we’ve seen. The biggest differentiator, in my opinion, is whether or not United Club access is valuable to you. If not, there’s no reason to pay the extra $345, especially given the Quest card’s perks.

US Bank has renewed a promotion for new Business Checking accounts that offers either a $400 or $1200 bonus with very simple requirements. This deal is available in states within US Bank’s footprint (or for US Bank cardholders) and requires making one or more deposits totaling either $5,000 or $25,000 within 30 days of account opening, holding that money in the account until 60 days after account opening, then making five transactions. The total of the deposits and the account type will determine the bonus amount. $5,000 gets you $400; $25,000 gets you $1200.

US Bank is again allowing up to $3,000 of credit card funding on new accounts, so use it if you got it.

• New money is defined as funds from outside U.S. Bank and cannot be transferred from another U.S. Bank product or a U.S. Bank Affiliate. 

Quick Thoughts

This is an easy checking account bonus: the requirements are very simple: make deposits totaling $ 5,000 or $25,000 within 30 days of account opening, hold the money in the account for 60 days after account opening, sign up for online banking, and complete 5 transactions on the account. That’s it.

Since you can open an account with as little as $100, you don’t need to deposit the remainder until day 25-30. After 60 days (from account opening), you just need to maintain a positive balance until the bonus is credited (US Bank allows up to 45 days for that). So, you shouldn’t have to leave the full amount in the account for longer than 30-35 days.

There are two types of business checking accounts. You can get the $400 bonus by signing up for Business Essentials, which has no maintenance fees. The account is limited to 125 transactions per month, and each transaction incurs a $.50 fee. Why would you do more than 125 transactions in a month?

The $1200 bonus now requires a Platinum checking account. Previously, you could get the higher level with Business Essentials, but now that you must open the higher-level account, maintenance fees become a bigger issue. It’s $30/month, unless you maintain an average minimum balance of $25,000. That’s no big deal for the month that you keep the $25K in the account, but there’s still the first month (before you deposit the lion’s share of the money) and the last month while you’re waiting for the bonus to be credited.

Leaving the cash in means you’d be forgoing ~$100/month to save $30 in maintenance fees… which seems like a bad deal to me. It’s probably better to just take the money out and know you’ll pay ~$60 in fees, bringing the total bonus closer to $1000 ($1200 – ~$60 in fees and ~$125 in interest on the money you have tied up for a month).

US Bank bonuses have usually been limited to states with a US Bank branch (which is a wide net… see locations here). If you live in one of the states without a branch, you used to be able to get around this requirement by opening a US Bank brokerage account first and then opening the checking account later. Based on previous comments, it sounds like US Bank may have closed that loophole but is now allowing folks with a US Bank credit card to open checking accounts, even if they’re outside the US Bank footprint.

US Bank is fairly strict on its churning rules, so I wouldn’t mess with it if you’ve had an account or received a US Bank bonus within the past year. If you haven’t, this is easy money.

Capital One is targeting many cardholders with some incredible offers when making a DoorDash purchase. These are available through Capital One Offers (not to be confused with the Capital One Shopping portal) and seem to vary between 5,000-14,000 miles after making only one order through DoorDash.

I was targeted for 5,400 miles, while Stephen and his wife each received an offer for 5,800. That said, I’ve seen several versions that were in the 13,000 – 14,000-mile range, so if you’re a cardholder, it’s worth checking to see what you have.

I could only find one for 600 miles in my accounts, unfortunately, but take a look and let us know what you find!

Quick Thoughts

This is obviously an incredible deal. We value Capital One Miles at 1.45 cents each, so even my 5,400-mile offer is worth ~$80, while those targeted for 13,000+ would be getting somewhere around $200 in value back. From just one order.

There aren’t any terms specifying a minimum order amount, and while it does say that you get miles for your “first” order, it doesn’t say that it needs to be the first time that you’ve ever used DoorDash.

If you’re targeted for this offer, I’d use it sooner than later, as I can’t imagine that it will stick around for a long.

Quick Thoughts

A welcome offer of up to 300,000 bonus Membership Rewards is the highest publicly available we’ve ever seen on the Business Platinum Card®; so it’s a superb bonus.

The catch is that there’s no guarantee you’ll be offered 300,000 points as your welcome offer, given the ‘as high as’ wording. For example, I mentioned above that this offer has recently appeared on Google. I know that because I came across it in the wild earlier this month and decided to apply, even though I already have a few Business Platinum cards.\

Despite the offer having lifetime language, I was approved, but for a welcome bonus of 200,000 points rather than 300,000. That was a little disappointing, but it was an approval, and 200,000 points was the highest publicly available offer at the time anyway, so I didn’t feel too hard done by.

There’s no guarantee that the consolation prize for not being offered 300,000 points is 200,000 points; it could be even lower, or it might be in the 200,000-300,000 range.

Our first-year estimated value for someone offered 300,000 bonus points is more than $4,000, taking into account the value of the points and the card’s other benefits, and after accounting for the $895 annual fee. That’s an incredible amount for one credit card bonus, but it’s worth calculating yourself based on your valuations of the points and benefits.

That said, no matter how you slice and dice it, earning as many as 300,000 points is an incredible bonus. I remember something like 10 years ago when many of us salivated over the elusive 100,000 welcome offer on the consumer American Express Platinum Card®; now, 300,000 points is publicly available.

Referrals don’t appear to be displaying this new offer yet, at least not on a consistent basis. I imagine that will change in the coming days, so if it’s not urgent that you get this card immediately and your partner has another Amex card that they can refer you from, it might be worth waiting in order for them to pick up the bonus points for referring you (or vice versa).

I’ve recently been in a position to spend toward some Amex bonuses, and one thing has really surprised me: Amex bonuses are posting with blazing speed. In our case, that has applied to both welcome bonuses and spending bonuses, both in terms of Membership Rewards points and co-branded bonuses. This is a great enhancement, and I think it makes Amex cards all the more interesting (if this becomes representative of broader experience) since one could potentially work toward a bonus with an eye toward near-term use. While there’s never a guarantee that bonuses will post quickly, I’ve seen a very positive pattern lately.

An Amex offer for “spend $8,000, earn 2,000 bonus Membership Rewards points” posted before the transaction cleared

We recently crossed the spending threshold for an Amex Offer on my wife’s Blue Business Plus card. She had an offer to spend $8,000 and earn 2,000 bonus points (targeted, enrollment required). That’s not an incredibly generous return, but we were able to cross the threshold with a tax payment, so it effectively meant earning 2.25 points per dollar. That’s because the Blue Business Plus card earns 2 points per dollar spent on up to $50,000 in purchases per year (then 1X). Since we were under that threshold, $8,000 in purchases would ordinarily earn 16,000 points, but with the bonus, it earned a total of 18,000 points, an effective return of 2.25 points per dollar spent.

We met the spending threshold for that offer on March 27th. The 2,000 points from the Amex Offer posted to the account that day (on March 27th). The points from the purchase itself weren’t even pending yet (those didn’t show up under pending points until a day or two after purchase), but the 2,000 points from the Amex Offer had already posted to my account and were available for use.

The speed with which that Amex Offer posted surprised me, but that was just the first of a few such experiences I’ve had lately. The next was with The Business Platinum Card® from American Express.

Business Platinum card welcome bonus posted the day after meeting the spend

We had a large tax payment to make, and my wife noticed an offer for a Business Platinum card in her Amex account. She went to “Menu”, then “Cards”, then “View all business cards”.

Even though she already had a Business Platinum card (and she was logged in to her account), she found an offer there to open a new Business Platinum card and earn 200,000 points after $20,000 in purchases in the first 3 months (this was a targeted offer that is no longer available in our accounts at the time of writing).

Her application was not instantly approved but rather went pending review. A day later, the application was automatically approved, and her card was overnighted.

She received the card and made a tax payment for $20,000. The 200,000 welcome bonus points posted to her account the next day.

I was very surprised to see the bonus post to her account so quickly (and the points were immediately available for use). In the past, my Amex welcome bonuses have sometimes not posted until after the next statement close or after I had paid off the statement balance, but this was a brand new card that hasn’t yet had a statement generated. This was a much faster experience than what we’ve seen in the past.

It does make sense that Amex has the capacity for this. Capital One has long posted both points earned from purchases and bonuses shortly after a qualifying purchase posts to the account. Bilt similarly posts points to your account within a day or two of purchase. However, it was new to me to see Amex post these points so quickly.

To be clear, the points from the purchase itself have not posted to her account. Since the Business Platinum card offers 2X points on large purchases (of more than $5,000, on up to $2 million in such purchases per year), the purchase itself will earn 40,000 points. Those points are still pending in her account, whereas the welcome bonus points have been posted. In my experience, Amex points from purchases don’t post until after the purchases have been paid off. I expect that we’ll see those 40,000 points once my wife pays off the card balance.

Again, it makes sense to me that Amex can control how quickly to post Membership Rewards bonuses. That’s not to say that they always will; there’s no guarantee that you’ll have the same experience. It is possible that my wife saw these bonuses post so quickly because of her long-held positive history with Amex. A newcomer to Amex might see bonuses post more slowly. Offer terms always indicate that it can take something like 8-12 weeks for bonus points to post (as seen in the screenshot above). However, it makes sense to me that Amex can choose to speed that process up when it comes to posting bonus points in its own Membership Rewards points ecosystem.

However, I was even more surprised to see this speed hold up on a co-branded product.

My Hilton Honors American Express Surpass Card bonus posted to Hilton fewer than 48 hours after purchase

I also recently opened an Amex Hilton Honors Surpass card. I haven’t actually had a Surpass card in many years, so I was eligible for the welcome bonus. I had another large purchase to make that would knock out the $3,000 minimum spending requirement in one shot, so I went ahead and applied for the Surpass card.

Amex limits most customers to having no more than 5 credit cards. There’s a distinction between credit cards (with a revolving limit) and what Amex calls “Pay Over time” cards (like the Platinum and Gold cards), which are not subject to the 5-card-limit. I was at the Amex 5-credit-card limit, so I was not instantly approved. Instead, I was declined (which I found out a day or so later by checking the application status online and reading the associated letter). As expected, the reason for being declined was that I already had the maximum number of that type of product. I had an Amex Hilton business card that I wasn’t using, so I called the number on the letter and explained that I was at the 5-card limit and would be happy to cancel a card if that would help the application be approved.

The phone rep reviewed the application and confirmed that the 5-card limit was the issue and that if I closed one, they could reconsider the application. He then transferred me to a different department to close the Hilton Business card. That process only took a couple of minutes. After closing that out, I reconnected to the reconsideration team. Within a few minutes, the application for the Surpass card was approved.

I received the card a few days later. On the evening of March 31st, I made a purchase that would complete the spend for the welcome offer.

To my surprise, just after 8 am yesterday morning (April 2nd — fewer than 48 hours after making my purchase), I received an email from Hilton letting me know that my free night certificate from the welcome offer had arrived!

Sure enough, I logged in to my Hilton account and saw that both the free night award and the 130,000 welcome bonus points had already posted to my Hilton account! I was amazed to see the points and free night certificate posted to my co-branded account so quickly.

If this becomes (or perhaps already has become?) a broadly-applicable trend, it could make Amex cards all the more appealing in situations where you have a near-term use for a particular bonus. For instance, if I had a near-term use for this Hilton certificate, the speed with which it posted would certainly be highly valuable to me.

Bottom line

Keep in mind that your mileage may vary. There’s no guarantee that these results will apply in your situation or that the speed with which our bonuses have posted is indicative of a trend. On the other hand, I am surprised by the consistency: my wife’s Amex Offer, her welcome bonus, and my welcome bonus all posted with blazing speed. While we represent a small sample size in the overall scheme of things, the fact that we’ve seen three different bonus types post so quickly across two different cardholders, it gives me some hope that this is a new trend.

Of course, there’s always the chance that a bonus could post far slower than expected. Now and then, we hear from readers who have waited months for a new card welcome offer, only to have it post after many weeks (and sometimes a persistent follow-up with Amex). You never know for sure what you’re going to get, but our recent experiences keep Amex near the top of mind for situations where we have to make a big purchase and could make use of the opportunity to earn a big spending or welcome bonus with American Express.

Update: We were previously advised that FedEx will be removed from the Flexible Business Credit on the American Express® Business Gold card after October 1, 2026. We’ve now been advised that this was shared in error, so we’ve updated the card details accordingly to remove that.

What’s not clear is if it was simply an error that details about this benefit change were shared as early as they were, or if FedEx will remain as part of the Flexible Business Credit indefinitely. I suspect it’s the former, but we’ll let you know if/when there are any confirmed developments.

One of the American Express® Business Gold card’s more valuable benefits is the up to $240 per year Flexible Business Credit. Cardholders get a credit of up to $20 per month when using their card for purchases in the U.S. at office supply stores, Grubhub, and FedEx.

That benefit will become a little less valuable for some businesses later this year as FedEx will become Ex-FedEx: it’s being dropped in six months time.

FedEx will now only be part of the Flexible Business Credit through October 1, 2026. Purchases made on October 1 will still be eligible for the benefit, but any made after that won’t be eligible for the up to $20 statement credit.

It’s not clear yet as to whether a different retailer/service will be taking the place of FedEx on the Flexible Business Credit. We do know that Amex has been surveying cardholders about prospective changes to the Business Gold card, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the card gets revamped on October 1. That said, we already know that they’ll be adding a ChatGPT Business benefit this spring, so perhaps the revamp—if there is indeed a revamp—will occur sooner than that.

This change will clearly be a disappointment for businesses who’ve used the card for FedEx purchases each month as that’s up to $240 per year they could be missing out on going forward. However, the inclusion of office supply stores on the card makes it an easy benefit to use; if nothing else, you can buy gift cards in-store at Staples or Office Depot/OfficeMax, as well as third party gift cards online at Staples.com, in order to trigger the statement credit.

Other than the ability to get up to $20 back each month for FedEx purchases, the Business Gold is no longer a good card to use for shipping purchases anyway. In the past, U.S. purchases for shipping were one of the eligible 4X earning categories on the card, but those categories have since changed and shipping is no longer bonused.

American Express has just refreshed the welcome offer for the Business Gold Card®, and there’s both good and bad news. The good part is that this new version would be among the best we’ve ever seen for Business Gold, potentially offering 200,000 Membership Rewards® points after $15k in spend within the first 3 months.

The bad news is that Amex’s silly “as high as” language is part of the other, so you won’t know what you’ll get until you’ve already filled out the application.

Referrals don’t currently seem to be showing this offer, but I imagine they will soon, so if you’re in the market, it might be worth waiting a week or two to see if you can pick up some additional household points.

Quick Thoughts

200,000 points is a superb welcome offer for the Business Gold, but unfortunately, there’s no guarantee you’ll actually get it. Amex has been playing around with this “as high as” business for some time, applying it to more and more cards (including the Business Platinum®, which is “as high as” 300,000 points).

The reason I can’t stand them is that they pull you in with the promise of massive points or miles, but you don’t find out what Amex is willing to offer until you’ve submitted the application. You don’t get a credit pull until after you’ve accepted it, so there’s still time to withdraw the app with no ill effect, but it’s a pain in the rear. Essentially, Amex is rolling out dynamic, micro-targeted offers.

Our first-year estimated value for someone who’s offered 200,000 bonus points is ~$2,500, when taking into account the value of the points and other benefits, and after accounting for the annual fee plus the opportunity cost of the spend. That’s an amazing value, but it all depends on which offer you’re targeted for after you apply.

Update: Alaska and Bank of America have sweetened the welcome offers on both consumer cards further, adding a discount code good for 50% off a future flight. The good news is that the discount code is awarded within 10 days of approval with no spending required.

The bad news is that it’s only good for economy flights between September 8th and November 18th, and has an amazing amalgamation of destination-based restrictions:

Quick Thoughts

These higher-than-standard welcome offers have come and gone several times since the cards were launched last year. It’s always good to see them return, but there’s no guarantee that this’ll continue happening on an ongoing basis, so if you’ve been considering applying for one of these cards, now seems to be a great opportunity seeing as the welcome offers have increased.

On the Atmos Ascent and Atmos Business cards, in addition to earning bonus points, you’ll also earn a Companion fare that can be redeemed for someone traveling with you for a $99 fare + taxes. The Atmos Summit card, meanwhile, has the highest welcome offer of all three cards with 100,000 bonus points available, plus a 25,000-point Global Companion fare.

World of Hyatt has launched a new promotion, once again to try to encourage members to stay at its Under Canvas glamping properties.

This time, World of Hyatt credit card and World of Hyatt Business credit card holders can earn 11 bonus points per dollar spent on Under Canvas stays, capped at 100,000 total bonus points during the promotion period.

Note that the promo page advertises 20 total points, but this includes the normal 5x earned as a Hyatt member and 4x earned from using a Hyatt card to pay for the stay.

Quick Thoughts

Hyatt really drives me nuts with how they advertise bonus point earnings, both on the credit cards and on promos like these. It always includes normal earnings in the promo’s headline, making it seem like the bonus is bigger than it is.

In this case, despite how it’s advertised, it’s NOT a 20x bonus, since that includes the 9x points you’d earn as a Hyatt member paying with a Hyatt credit card. The bonus promo is only an additional 11x.

We value Hyatt points at 1.7 cents each, so an 11x bonus is sort of like getting ~19% back on an Under Canvas stay. It’s valid on both paid and award stays, but Under Canvas falls under Hyatt’s ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’ banner, which means that redemptions tend to come in at a poor value for your points. Cash stays aren’t usually a screaming deal, either.

Given that, this promotion isn’t really enough to make it worth going out of your way to book a stay at an Under Canvas location, but it’s useful if you were already planning to visit one anyway.

Quick Thoughts

Mile Play offers vary from person to person – if you’re even targeted – so there’s not one single offer that’s applicable to everyone. It seems like, more and more, they send out offers in waves as opposed to all at once. My offer gives 5,900 bonus miles after taking one “trip” with United by June 9th. A “trip” is defined as a flight that costs more than $225, and one-way flights count.

There are a couple of important things to keep in mind when it comes to United Mile Play offers. The first is that the spending threshold for the flight(s) you need to take relates to the fare itself. There are various taxes and fees added when booking paid flights, so in my case, the fare and carrier-imposed surcharges portion has to be at least $225, not including government-imposed taxes and fees… but your spending threshold might be higher or lower.

The other key thing to note is that qualifying flights must be booked after you’ve registered for the promotion. Nick once booked a United flight just a couple of days before being targeted for MilePlay. However, because that flight was booked before he registered for his Mile Play offer, it wasn’t eligible as a qualifying flight to meet the offer requirements. Thankfully, that was easy to remedy; the price hadn’t changed, so he was able to cancel and rebook to earn the bonus miles from the flight.

If you know someone who does not yet use the Rakuten shopping portal, both you and they can receive $50, 5,000 Membership Rewards points, or 5,000 Bilt points when they sign up and spend at least $50 through the portal. That should be very easy to do, so I definitely recommend taking advantage of it if you can.

Note that the $50 bonus can be triggered when the person you refer shops online or spends $50 with Rakuten’s in-store offers.

This is the best referral offer that we’ve ever seen from Rakuten and it’s been extended through June 30th, 2026.

Quick Thoughts

This can be a great bonus as it means the person you refer can essentially get a $50 item for free after cash back, and you get $50, 5,000 Membership Rewards points, or 5,000 Bilt points for helping them do it. When you sign up for Rakuten, your account preference is set to earn cash back by default, but you can switch your earning preference to Membership Rewards or Bilt points.

Just make sure your referees sign up by June 30th. They then have 90 days to make $50 in purchases through Rakuten, which should be fairly easy – it’s a good deal for them as well.

As noted by Miles Talk yesterday, American Express Membership Rewards will be dropping Etihad Guest as a transfer partner on June 30, 2026. That means that you can still transfer points from Amex to Etihad through June 29, 2026, but you will no longer be able to do so beginning on June 30th. That’s not a huge loss since Etihad has what is among the most punitive award cancellation policies, making the program of limited use. However, for the right use cases, Etihad Guest can work out well, so it is still disappointing to see this partnership end.

Etihad has an awful award cancellation policy, but is sometimes useful

I generally don’t recommend the Etihad Guest program because of its awful award cancellation policy. If you cancel an award far in advance, you’ll lose 25% of the miles used for the redemption. That number jumps to 50%, 75%, and then 100% of the miles as you enter the weeks prior to departure. For an expensive award, losing half or three-quarters of the miles used for the redemption in order to cancel would be a massive penalty. Since plans can change, I don’t recommend using Etihad guest miles for redemptions far in the future.

However, Last summer, I discovered how useful Etihad Guest can be for shorter JetBlue routes. That’s especially true close in, when cash prices (and award prices through JetBlue) can be high, yet award availability sometimes exists that is accessible via Etihad Guest. For instance, I booked flights to Martha’s Vineyard about a month prior to departure when cash prices were very high, and paid just 6,020 Etihad Guest miles one way. I even had to cancel and award like that, and the cancellation penalty ended up being more reasonable than I expected.

Similarly, Etihad Guest can sometimes present a great value for booking American Airlines itineraries, and if you want a book Etihad Business or First Class far in advance, Etihad Guest is usually your only option is usually your only option. It is disappointing to see this transfer partnership end, even if it is of limited use.

Amex transfers to Etihad Guest available through 6/29/26

Speaking of the end of the partnership, you will no longer be able to transfer Amex Membership Rewards to Etihad Guest as of June 30th, 2026. That means you have through June 29th to make a transfer.

I don’t actually see this noted when I log into my American Express account, but as mentioned at the top, this was reported at Miles Talk (and several other sites like The Points Guy and Upgraded Points) yesterday, so I expect it is probably showing up on statements generated in April.

Keep in mind that Bilt Points, Capital One Miles and Citi Thank You Rewards still partner with Etihad Guest, and we haven’t seen any news about those partnerships ending, so we expect that there will still be options to earn transferable points that can transfer to Etihad.

However, if you primarily have American Express Membership Rewards and are looking to transfer to Etihad Guest, you’ve got a couple of months left to do so.
