Update 8/1/26:  A week after a lot of decent gift card redemption options were removed from Capital One Shopping, a number of good ones have returned.

The selection of gift cards you’ll see is targeted, so there’s no guarantee you’ll have all—or even some—of these. However, some people are now able to redeem their Capital One Shopping cashback for brands including Best Buy, Starbucks, DoorDash, Lowe’s, Lululemon, Kohl’s, and more.

Capital One Shopping, the public shopping portal, has added some very interesting gift card redemption options, including Apple and Princess Cruises. Note that we sometimes see gift card redemption options come and go. For instance, though I’ve had Best Western available in my account for a long time, Stephen reported this morning that Best Western and eBay showed up in his account for the first time in a while. I’ve consistently had options that I frequently use, like Hotels.com and Marriott gift cards, but there are lots of other useful options that have been added in the last few days.

The Deal

As a reminder, Capital One Shopping is a publicly available shopping portal. You do not need a Capital One account of any sort to use Capital One Shopping. However, the rewards earned through Capital One Shopping can only be redeemed for gift cards. The options available for gift card redemption change over time, though I’ve noticed that the options in my account have mostly stabilized over the last year, with some minor ebb and flow in availability. The brands I care most about, including Hotels.com and Marriott.com, have been available in my account for at least a year if I recall correctly. However, when I saw Apple available as a gift card redemption option over the weekend, I knew that would be of great interest to those readers who have built up a sizable amount of Capital One Shopping rewards.

I see numerous other options newly available in my account today, including Princess Cruises. I’ve not seen that particular option before. I also see many lesser-value brands.

Keep in mind that many merchant gift cards can be purchased at a discount through various channels now and then. That said, I’m happy to see a wider range of gift card redemption options, as that makes it increasingly likely that you’ll find a good option for you through your Capital One Shopping account.

It’s worth mentioning that some users seem to have a lot of difficulty with Capital One Shopping offers tracking properly. I’ve had great success with the portal, earning five figures worth of cash back in my account alone. I continue using it frequently, and I’m glad to see more gift card redemption options for those of us who are finding success with it.

ALL Accor does not get much attention in the blogosphere because points are worth a fixed amount towards stays. That fixed amount is two euro cents per point. The transfer ratio from Bilt to Accor is 3:2, which means your Bilt points are worth about 1.52 cents per point when used toward Accor stays, based on the current exchange rate of  €0.01 = $0.0114. While it’s impossible to get outsized value with Accor points, one of the key advantages is that you can book any room type and use points to cover your room, either at booking or at checkout (though you may want to head to checkout early, as Greg ran into an issue where the email verification code he needed to use points at checkout didn’t come through immediately). You can also use points to cover things like dining and spa charges, etc.

For those unfamiliar, Accor has a huge footprint outside the US, with brands like Fairmont, Sofitel, Mövenpick, Novotel, Ibis, Ibis Styles, SLS, SO/, and many more. The US footprint is small, but in Europe and Asia, Accor has strong coverage. One rarely discussed program feature that can be particularly handy for family travelers is that some hotels offer a “Family rate”, whereby you get a 50% discount on the room rate for a second room.

This month, on August 1st only, you can increase value a bit further with a status offer that depends on your status with Bilt and the need to transfer some amount of points as follows:

• Bilt members with no status or Silver: match to Accor Silver when transferring 5,000 Bilt Points (which become 3,333 Accor points, which are worth €66.66)
• Bilt Gold: match to Accor Gold when transferring 5,000 Bilt Points (which become 3,333 Accor points, which are worth €66.66)
• Bilt Platinum: match to Accor Platinum when transferring 15,000 Bilt Points (which becomes 10,000 Accor points, worth €200)

Matches to Silver and Gold will be valid for 12 months from activation (the activation link will arrive within 48 hours of qualifying transfer) and have to be activated within 30 days, so you don’t need to activate immediately unless you’re about to stay at an Accor property. Matches to Platinum will be completed within 5 business days (with no need to activate) and will be valid through December 31, 2027. The nice thing here is that the match doesn’t require you to have other hotel elite status, and you don’t lose any value in the transfer. Elite status is a nice added benefit.

According to the promotion landing page, Silver status can be extended through December 31, 2027 after 3 stays and Gold can be extended to the same date with 8 stays, but it doesn’t state a timeframe for the stays. The Terms & Conditions link on the landing page leads to January 2025 Bilt Rent Day terms. Under that offer a year and a half ago, the stay window was the entire year (through December 31, 2025) in order to extend for an additional year. Assuming this offer is similar, I suppose you’ll likely have 12 months to meet the stay requirements to extend. Maybe Bilt will update the terms and conditions between now and August 1st.

Accor elite benefits are a bit less robust than some other programs, with Silver members receiving a free welcome drink and late checkout based on availability. Gold members add the potential for early check-in and free upgrades. Platinum status adds lounge access and two suite night upgrade certificates, which could certainly come in handy. If I had Bilt Platinum status, I would almost surely take the match here as I would seek out a use of the suite upgrades that, when combined with the value received in terms of points, would make for a nice win.

It is worth noting that Accor appears to be in the midst of a big push to expand reach. We’ve recently seen Amex Platinum cards in the United Kingdom and Canada add Accor Gold status as a card benefit after launching transfers to Accor in those countries. We don’t yet know whether Amex will add Accor points transfers or status for US card members, but Accor does seem to want to build interest in the program

Emirates uses distance-based awards. Earlier this year, it updated its partner award charts, in the process making short-distance flights less expensive on many carriers. United and Air Canada weren’t among them, unfortunately. Pricing for both carriers is governed by the following chart (amounts shown are without the economy sale applied):

Many of the award rates aren’t terribly exciting, but you can certainly score some reasonably-priced award tickets in certain situations. For instance, you’ll find some short-distance United economy class flights for just 6,000 miles and $5.60 one-way, like these options from Salt Lake City to Denver.

That certainly beats the 10,600 miles that United is charging for the same flights.

Note that you can use the flexible date search to look for up to a week at a time by checking the box for “+/- 3 days” on the calendar:

While it isn’t a completely failsafe method, we used Seats.aero and searched for North America to North America via Air Canada Aeroplan to find a United flight that was available to Air Canada in the hopes that it would also be available to other partners like Emirates. That might not work in all cases because Air Canada Aeroplan might have expanded access to some United award space.

All tickets are auction-style. Bidding on some packages starts at 40,000 Choice Privileges points, while other packages start as high as 150,000 points.

The appeal of each package will largely depend on which college team you support, although even for neutrals there are some eye-catching games like Oklahoma vs Michigan and Oregon vs Ohio State.

From a value perspective though, some packages are potentially much better than others. That’s because the packages that have bidding starting at 150,000 points include two-night hotel stays and, even more valuably, $1,500 in gift cards. In previous years, those were Visa gift cards and so pretty much as good as cash.

In past years, those types of packages were listed on a ‘bid now’ basis, which means that if you redeemed points before the packages sold out, you were guaranteed the package. That’s not the case this year, though, because of their auction-style nature. Although the opening bids for each of those packages were 150,000 points, they’ll likely end up going higher than that by the time bidding ends.

If you don’t currently have sufficient Choice points in your account to place a bid, it’s a tricky decision whether to transfer points, particularly from Wells Fargo, since they transfer on a 1:2 basis. You’ll need enough points to place a bid, but that means transferring points that’ll subsequently be stuck there if you ultimately get outbid. If you’re content with being able to redeem Choice points in other ways in the future, that might not be so bad; just be aware that it’s a very real possibility.

Another option for getting enough points to place a bid is to buy Choice points. Some people can currently buy points for as low as 0.62 cents per point. Depending on the final winning bid cost, buying points could still be a profitable endeavor based on the value of the gift cards, even if you have zero interest in the game tickets, hotel stay, etc.

While 15% isn’t a terribly exciting bonus, it can nonetheless be useful, especially since it’s coming from Capital One, which doesn’t offer nearly as many transfer bonuses as Amex or Chase.  Avianca has devalued awards a couple of times in recent years, but a number of sweet spots remain.

We always recommend keeping points transferable until you need to make a booking, rather than transferring speculatively. That is particularly important for Avianca, given that Lifemiles expire after just 12 months of inactivity unless you are a Lifemiles+ subscriber.

The deals I am seeing on my account are primarily 1,000 miles back on $20+ in purchases, 1,500 miles back on $30 in purchases, or 2,000 miles back on $40 in purchases. You must have a Capital One card to be eligible for Capital One Offers, unlike the Capital One Shopping portal, which anyone can use. However, it still functions more or less like any other shopping portal, where you click a link and make your purchase.

Capital One specifically states that you can use a non-Capital One card online and receive the incentive. However, we have heard from numerous folks over the years who have had issues getting the offer fulfilled when they used another bank’s card if the offer doesn’t track. In-store, you must use the Capital One card that you added the offer to in order to trigger it.

This has the potential to be a great deal, especially given the low purchase thresholds required. Most of the terms exclude gift cards. I have no idea if, as often happens with Chase or Amex Offers, you’ll still be able to trigger the offers with an in-store gift card purchase, but I’d avoid doing it online (I’d love to hear others’ experiences in the comments).

If the recent promotion to earn additional points for purchases paid for with payment platform Paze was not yet enough to interest you in checking out the platform, there’s a new promotion out now whereby you can get $10 back on $10 or more, up to $100 back on every eligible card you have (which includes both credit and debit cards across most of the major banks and many credit unions and other financial institutions).

There are now some major restrictions on the retailers and types of transactions that this promotion can be used for now. Most significantly, the Paze checkout option is no longer available for gift cards via Newegg and Clover.

I imagine that will make Paze wildly more popular because not only do you have the opportunity to potentially earn additional points per dollar on select cards, but you have the opportunity to get $100 back on a wide range of cards that you probably already have in your wallet.

Paze is a payment platform similar to PayPal. At select merchants, during checkout, you’ll see Paze as a payment method option. Only a limited number of merchants accept Paze so far, but with Paze coming from the same company behind Zelle, that will likely continue to expand.

Some sites like Newegg accept Paze and sell many third-party gift cards, which could certainly make this useful. In fact, Dan’s Deals has identified a range of merchants for whom it is possible to purchase $10 gift cards, which will surely make this promotion very useful for folks who don’t mind dealing with numerous small-denomination gift cards. I expect that some of those $10 gift cards may sell out sooner rather than later, so if you’re interested in taking advantage of this, it’s probably worth considering that list while you can. I also imagine that loading your Dunkin’ account in the Dunkin’ app should work if you’re able to check out with Paze, though I haven’t checked to see if that’s possible in my app.

I did see the $10 back on $10 reflected when using Paze to check out at Newegg just now (I bought a $10 Uber gift card).

In an email from a marketing representative, City Experiences was highlighted as a participating merchant. I hadn’t heard of City Experiences before, but it appears to be a tour booking website (think Viator, but with a website that looks much less modern). Unfortunately, it seems to only be available in select cities; however, there are experiences that start at just over $10. It’s certainly possible that you’ll find something relatively inexpensive to do if you need additional ideas for using credits.

Overall, this certainly seems like quite an incentive to give the Paze payment platform a try. I tend to avoid most third-party digital wallets, particularly because they sometimes interfere with card-linked offers. However, I’ll certainly be checking Paze out now.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card has long been widely regarded as one of the best starter travel rewards credit cards in the hobby. That’s because of the flat 2x it offers on all travel, excellent travel protections, and a couple of other useful bonus categories.

The card has now been refreshed by bumping up its annual hotel credit, adding a credit for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or Nexus, and adding a couple of useful new bonus categories (read Greg’s take on those changes here). That’s all great news, and I think it will make this card a fantastic fit for most newcomers to this hobby (and still an excellent fit for many long-term rewards credit card enthusiasts).

The biggest negative change with today’s refresh is that transfers from Chase Ultimate Rewards to World of Hyatt are now 4:3 for new Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders (down from 1:1), so you’ll need to transfer 4 Ultimate Rewards points to get 3 World of Hyatt points. This new transfer ratio applies to those who apply starting today (6/15/26). Those who had their cards open prior to June 15, 2026, will maintain a 1:1 transfer ratio until October 1, 2026, when the transfer ratio will become 4:3 for all Sapphire Preferred cardholders.

Overall, the Chase Sapphire Preferred remains a great card for the $95 annual fee price tag. It has been more than a year since we last saw this card offer 100,000 points, so if you’ve been interested in the Sapphire Preferred, now is probably a great time to consider it. I should add that we did see a very brief window last year where it was possible to earn additional bonus points from Rakuten by clicking through to apply for the Sapphire Preferred card. That offer expired a long time ago and only lasted a couple of days, but if you’re still on the fence about this card, you might want to keep an eye out for anything like that coming back.

Quick Thoughts

This offer provides some excellent savings if you’ve been considering a Homes & Villas stay. Even if you hadn’t been looking at one previously, it could be worth checking out your options if you need to book any paid accommodation for the coming year, as the $350 statement credit could more than offset any additional cost of booking through this platform.

Stacking those with this Amex Offer could create some terrific rates on vacation rentals.

Quick Thoughts

Mile Play offers vary from person to person – if you’re even targeted – so there’s not one single offer that’s applicable to everyone. It seems like, more and more, they send out offers in waves as opposed to all at once. In fact, neither my wife nor I have received one yet.

Stephen’s wife’s original offer gave her a 10,000-mile bonus for becoming a United credit cardholder, 2,300 miles for linking her United and Lyft accounts (which is decent on its own), and 700 miles for opting into push notifications on the United app. If she does all three, she gets another 13K for a total of 26,000 miles.

The offer that I was targeted for today gets me a 6,000-mile bonus after I take one trip that costs $275 or more.

There are a couple of important things to keep in mind about United Mile Play offers. The first is that the spending threshold for the flight(s) you need to take relates to the fare itself. Various taxes and fees are added when booking paid flights, but the fare and carrier-imposed surcharges must exceed the minimum threshold by themselves, excluding government-imposed taxes and fees.

Another key point to note is that qualifying flights must be booked after you’ve registered for the promotion. Nick once booked a United flight just a couple of days before being targeted for MilePlay. However, because that flight was booked before he registered for his MilePlay offer, it wasn’t eligible as a qualifying flight to meet the offer requirements. Thankfully, that was easy to remedy; the price hadn’t changed, so he was able to cancel and rebook to earn the bonus miles from the flight.

Quick Thoughts

Once upon a time, it was possible to buy Delta gift cards from a specific link in order to lock in the discount. Unfortunately, that’s no longer an option because all Delta gift card purchases online are processed by CashStar. Still, this is a good offer if you need to book any flights with Delta in the coming months.

It seems to be fairly targeted. I checked both my wife’s and my cards, and there’s nary an offer to be found.

If you are lucky enough to have it, there is one hoop to jump through that could make it slightly irritating: the flights must originate in the US. Many folks have been able to apply these to other flights by booking a main cabin flight that complies with the terms and then canceling it after 24 hours to retain a Delta flight credit. If you go this route, note that the resulting flight credit will only be valid for one year.

When buying third-party gift cards, you can earn 4x fuel points, saving you up to 14% on gas. To illustrate how that 14% figure is calculated, let’s say you spend $250 on gift cards during the promotion. That would earn you 1,000 fuel points, which can be redeemed for $1 off per gallon on up to 35 gallons. If you’re able to refuel to that 35-gallon limit (perhaps with a large gas tank or refueling 2+ household vehicles at once), you’d save $35. Saving $35 on the original $250 in gift card spend amounts to a 14% discount.

If your gas tank is smaller, though, your savings won’t be as high. For example, our car holds at most 12 gallons, so we can barely save 5% on gas through these promotions, given how much we spend on gift cards. You can often get better discounts on gift cards through sites like Raise, so weigh up all your options before buying them at full price from Kroger or its affiliates, such as Dillons, King Soopers, Ralphs, Fry’s, or Smith’s.

You can earn 4x fuel points on gift cards purchased online or in-store, though there are a couple of important differences between the two. If you’ll be buying in-store, you have to load the digital coupons to your account first, whereas you’ll automatically earn 4x fuel points when buying gift cards online from Kroger.

The other thing to bear in mind is that buying gift cards in-store lets you take advantage of the plethora of cards offering bonus spend at grocery stores right now. Kroger’s online gift card site processes payments through Blackhawk Network (the owner of GiftCards.com), so those online orders don’t count as grocery purchases.

Quick Thoughts

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles transfer bonuses are a rare breed. In fact, it’s been more than two years since the last one (other than a targeted transfer bonus from Amex Membership Rewards that disappeared after the first time you saw it on your account, if you were even targeted in the first place). As a result, getting a 10% bonus is much better than your normal options, even if it is a low percentage bonus.

It’s certainly not a no-brainer though for a few reasons. For starters, the bonus miles are capped at 10,000 which means you’ll max out this offer when transferring a total of 100,000 points from bank programs (other than 125,000 points from Amex due to the transfer ratio) or 300,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. That’s a relatively low limit considering the also low transfer bonus rate.

Another key sticking point is that the terms state it’ll take up to 12 weeks to have the bonus miles credited to your account. That might not be a bother if you’re simply considering a speculative transfer, but if you have a redemption in mind that you want to book in the next three months, you’d still need to transfer in the full number of miles that you’ll require for said redemption.

Which leads on to another potential issue. Assuming the 10% bonus miles don’t arrive until after you want to make a redemption, those miles will be at risk of vanishing as Asia Miles expire after 18 months of inactivity. You can reset the clock by transferring in more miles before those 18 months are up, but it’s up to you to decide if that’s worth it for the sake of a maximum of 10,000 miles.

You can find the full list of eligible bank partners here and hotel partners here. Despite having Cathay Pacific as a transfer partner, Rove doesn’t appear on either list—presumably because it’s neither a bank partner nor a hotel partner. That said, Bilt Rewards isn’t, strictly speaking, a bank partner either despite them having a few credit cards with which you can earn points, so perhaps a Rove transfer will trigger a 10% bonus; I imagine it’s unlikely though.

Remember that American Express reduced the transfer ratio from Membership Rewards recently. They no longer provide 1:1 transfers, instead reducing that to 5:4. That means that with the 10% bonus, every 1,000 Membership Rewards you transfer will become 880 Asia Miles.

Although Cathay partners with many different hotel loyalty programs, the only one worth considering is Marriott Bonvoy. That’s because Marriott points transfer on a 3:1 basis, with 5,000 bonus miles being added for every 60,000 points you transfer. I don’t think that the 5,000 bonus miles you earn for every 60,000 transferred will also benefit from the 10% bonus, so maxing out the promotion this way means that transferring 300,000 Marriott points would get you 135,000 Cathay Pacific Asia Miles.

Despite it taking almost a month to be able to register for this spending offer, if you’ve already used your Southwest card to make hotel or lodging purchases this month, that spending will still earn 2X Companion Pass qualifying points provided you register for the offer by September 30.

I’m not 100% sure what the spending limit is for this offer. It states that you’ll earn 2X Companion Pass qualifying points and that there’s a limit of 10,000 bonus qualifying points. However, you earn 1X as standard, so I’m not sure if the 10,000 limit includes the normal 1X or not. If it does include that 1X, you’ll max this out when spending $5,000 on hotels and lodging; if it doesn’t include that 1X, you’ll max it out with $10,000 spend.

Larger sales tend to be found at this Promotions page (our affiliate link), but Giftcards.com also tends to have a Deal of the Day that can be found on the site’s homepage.

With a limit of $50 back as a statement credit, you’ll max this out when spending a total of $1,000.

Note that this Giftcards.com Chase Offer is only valid for one purchase per credit card that it’s loaded to. As a result, if you’re planning on buying several different gift cards it’ll be best to do that in one transaction that’s for $1,000 or less, unless you have this Chase Offer on multiple cards. If you do have it on multiple cards, you could do separate purchases on each of them if you want. Seeing as this Chase Offer is specifically for Giftcards.com and gift cards are the only thing that site sells, I don’t think you need to worry about your purchases being regarded as abusing Chase Offers.

• If regular A-List status is earned by Member by flying 20 qualifying one-way flights or earning 35,000 tier qualifying points in the 2026 calendar year while qualified for promotional A-List status, the regular A-List status will supersede the promotional A-List status, entitling the Member to A-List status through December 31, 2027.

Quick Thoughts

Southwest A-List status usually requires taking 20 one way flights or by earning 35,000 tier qualifying points. This promotion slashes the flight requirement by 80% seeing as you only need to take 4 one way (or 2 round trip) flights in order to get A-List status. That makes it much easier to achieve, although do note that the status earned via this promotion expires at the end of 2026, whereas A-List status earned in the conventional way would be valid through the end of 2027.

If you take 8 one way flights (or 4 round trips), you’ll get an additional 20,000 bonus Rapid Rewards points. It’s unlikely that that’ll make it worth a mileage run unless you only need one (or maybe two) further one way flights after the rest of your travel, but it’s a very good reward nonetheless.

Something important to be aware of is that the flights have to be booked via SWABIZ, GDS, or another qualifying partner that can book business flights. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter if you’re actually flying for business, plus my understanding is that SWABIZ fares match those you’ll find on Southwest.com, so it’s not like you’re being forced to pay a higher fare in order to take advantage of this promotion.

Nick reminded me that if you’re not currently registered for SWABIZ, it’s worth having your partner (if you have one) refer you. That’s because if you refer someone for SWABIZ and they register and complete 1 round trip or 2 one way flights within 90 days, the person referring the business gets 25,000 bonus Rapid Rewards points.

Also be aware that flights booked entirely with Rapid Rewards points aren’t eligible, nor are flights where a Companion Pass is being used if you’re the companion. If you’re the person with a Companion Pass and you’re traveling with your Companion, you’ll still be eligible if you’ve paid a cash fare or a fare with Cash + Points. You also have to register before booking qualifying flights and those flights have to be completed by October 31, 2026. Even if you have flights booked via SWABIZ that’ll take place during the promotion period, those won’t count if they were booked before registering for this promo.

This is likely a targeted promotion. When trying to register for it, you’ll need to be logged in to your Rapid Rewards account. After logging in and visiting the registration page, you should see a yellow ‘Register Now’ button. If you do, you’re targeted. If you don’t see that button, that unfortunately means you’re not eligible for this offer.

Depending on any elite status you currently hold with other airlines and your upcoming travel plans, it might make sense to utilize Southwest’s status match feature instead. Even if you have low level status with other domestic airlines, you can match to A-List status for 120 days and extend that for an additional 12 months if, during those 120 days, you fly 3 round trips or 6 one way flights. Those are slightly higher requirements than this limited time promotion, but the status match avenue gives you 120 days to complete the requirements—more than the ~90 days from this offer. Status matching doesn’t award 20,000 bonus points though.

Best Uses for Hilton Points

• 5th night free. Use points to book 5 nights for the price of 4. This benefit is valid on longer stays, so if staying 10 nights you’ll get both the 5th and 10th nights free. Hilton status is required to take advantage of this benefit, but you can get that with the no annual fee Hilton credit card.
• Save money on low category hotels. Hilton hotel awards start at 5,000 points per night, but those can be very difficult to find. 10,000 and 15,000 point properties are more common.  These would cost $50 or $75 when booked with purchased points when Hilton is offering a 100% bonus, or less if using the 5th night free benefit.
• Stay at high-end properties for less. Most of Hilton’s top-tier properties top out at 150,000 points per night for a standard room, although some go as high as 250,000 points. When points are being sold with a 100% bonus, 150,000 points would cost you $750, which isn’t cheap, but it is less than the cash rate at many properties charging that many points.
• Pool points with up to 10 other members. Hilton allows members to create a pool with up to 10 people to share points back and forth. This makes the effective purchase limit much higher when combining forces with other members.

Things to Know About Hilton Points

• When you book nights with points, you will not earn points for the stay unless Hilton is running a promotion that awards bonus points per night/stay which includes award nights.
• Most hotel taxes are not charged on award stays, so this can make the value of buying points even better. Arguably, this factor and the one above roughly cancel each other out.
• Resort and destination fees are waived on award stays. This alone can make it worthwhile to use points instead of cash for your bookings.

I’ve not had a chance to stay at any Ruby Hotels yet, but I’m definitely interested as they look like beautiful, stylish properties. Earning 10,000 bonus points for every two nights you stay is a decent incentive, especially because it’ll stack with this separate promotion if you stay by the end of August.

Do be aware that this promotion is only valid on paid stays, not award stays or stays booked with Points + Cash.

Head for Points has also pointed out that there are a few nuances to how stays at Ruby Hotels work with regards to the wider IHG One Rewards program. If you have elite status you’re not eligible for a room upgrade, you can’t redeem Confirmable Suite Upgrade awards earned as part of IHG’s Milestone Rewards, and members with Diamond status aren’t eligible for complimentary breakfast. All that is disappointing considering that IHG actually purchased Ruby Hotels, rather than them simply striking up some kind of partnership.
