Today I talk directly to birth workers and about birth work specifically in this new offering for September. Most women I meet are chronically depleted and exhausted, and birth workers are at the top of that list.

The Honest Truth About Freebirth (Re-Release)

Here’s my truth: I’ve personally experienced freebirth AND I’m in the role of midwife and I do not see those two things as mutually exclusive.

However, I do have some thoughts/questions and maybe some wisdom to share around what I see the freebirth movement as. I want us all to question the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to labeling births as this or that, and I definitely come back to the issues of transparency and honesty.

Ultimately, each of us will choose what is right for us but that journey isn’t always so simple. I see that the freebirth conversation is one that is both enhancing and detracting from the journey of self-realization in birth and frankly I think we need to question absolutely everything!

In this podcast, a re-release from the archive, I unpack the issues around freebirth like trauma, preparation for emergencies (or not) and what I think is a crucial acknowledgement of many women desiring to be “witnessed” in the initiation of birth.

The Wisdom that Shaped Me as a Young Musician

…and how that has carried through to birth work! With the announcement of our Sacred Birth Certificate program, I wanted to do a lengthier storytelling share about my former life as a young musician.

This came to me in a dream recently as something I needed to feel in my body and I know it’s because it all comes back to unraveling LIFE wisdom which informs birth wisdom. This is also the mission and purpose of our Sacred Birth program and if you’re in for a longer listen, I share the teachings of the music teachers that shaped me.

So grateful for them all, those that I mentioned and those I did not. I am so appreciative of all of my teachers (music and midwifery) and aware that these “wisdom teachers” have always been with me, through various paths in my life. How I Used Midwifery Knowledge to Navigate My Pregnancy Loss

I have so much to share about my recent miscarriage but it felt easiest in some ways to begin by sharing the experience from a midwifery perspective. It really gets me how many women don’t know what a “normal” loss looks or feels like, or are told lies or shoved into the medical system for unnecessary intervention. I realized once again my body’s strength and power and the strength and power in ALL women to know their bodies and to release a pregnancy that is no longer growing. This is information that all women should have, and even though one doesn’t “need” a midwifery education and experience to navigate personal loss, it sure did help and come in handy when I needed it most.

This podcast was inspired by a student considering working with a mama who’s had a prior cesarean and wanting to birth at home. I realized how much goes into this for me as a midwife, and what helps me understand and fully believe in a mama who I’m supporting after cesarean. I told her that even when it all goes beautifully (which is often!) it can feel like a grad level course for the new midwife or student. Here are some things to consider, assess and weigh for yourself if you are considering taking on a woman who has had a cesarean; they make amazing clients often, and of course are still just birthing women like everyone else.

The First Blood

This is an expansion on an email I wrote recently about going through pregnancy and birth alone, SPECIFICALLY from the lens of trauma and safety. This isn’t a commentary on why all women choose “wild pregnancy” or freebirth but is a perspective on choices being made from the bodily sensations of lack of safety. This perspective feels so true for me, deep in my body. Acknowledging our own triggers and feelings of truth can help the collective move more quickly towards living from our wholeness; both individually and collectively.

There is so much wisdom in moving more slowly; apprenticeship and becoming a birth attendant is no exception. We live in a high octane world where even birth attendants are “made” in minutes or months. While that is an option, I really want us to consider the way it feels. Being in a hurry or feeling impatient on this path is also really normal; can we be with that and also hold space for the fact that we just can’t rush some things? It all depends on what your intention is; I share mine with you for this podcast and end up talking a bit about apprenticeship and how that fits into this idea.

I am so grateful for my somatic lessons lately and for my teachers, because to be able to transmute the experience of “they don’t like me or they don’t approve of my choices” is something I think so many women struggle with.

Whether you are a birthing woman or a birth worker, you are going to meet resistance. You will be challenged in your power and tested to stand in your own light, even when there are shadows. I hope this share is helpful and nourishing to you all on your path.

I had fun with this one since I’m not attending births right now and felt I could be so super duper honest! My hope for this podcast is that it inspires you to think beyond the (medical) box we’ve often found ourselves in as midwives and even as mamas that seek midwives.

Birth is Not Like Cabinets

In this podcast, I wanted to riff on a recent post/blog I made about birth not being something you order up like cabinets. I go into a LOT more detail and expand on this idea with what I feel we CAN and CANNOT influence.

Ultimately, we don’t get to choose life or death for another soul and I know that can feel both scary and comforting. As a midwife, I definitely do not get to choose that for anyone and if nothing else, want to make yet another plug for true and honest self responsibility.

It is time for the old way of blame and immaturity to end, and I hope this podcast gives you clarity on what we can control in birth; whether you are a mama or birthworker.

The Bar is So Low for Pregnant Women

After a brief update, I rant for a bit about the low standard that our world, and most women, seem to have for their pregnancy and birth experience. Whether it’s hospital based, home based or a dogmatic freebirth, it seems to me that women need to want more for themselves first. Otherwise, we just take whatever else someone tells us we should do and it isn’t questioned because we become desperate to have approval from one extreme or another. Birth isn’t about being in a club or needing a certain story; but listening deeply and knowing how powerful we are.

Apprenticeship #1: What are the Stepping Stones on this Path?

Margo joins me for the first in this new series about midwifery apprenticeship. As she says in our chat, it seems that the apprenticeship conversation has occasionally thrown the “baby out with the bathwater” (no pun intended!) around IF there is a structured path(And what it is), or not. I do feel like I have some responsibility to clear this up, since I may have muddied the waters over the years, talking about how intuition and a community “appointing” someone a midwife may (very rarely) take the place of a defined educational and hands-on learning path.

In this podcast, Margo and I share some stories and try to name and describe the stepping stones of the apprenticeship path; from the very beginning of being a green observer, to the “primary under supervision” role. This path is not identical for everyone, but even in the autonomous and radical midwifery world, a structure is needed. We hope this inspires conversation and questions, and we’re excited to continue this series with all topics related to midwifery education and apprenticeship learning!

Is the Community Midwife Dead or is the Community Dead?

I’ve asked myself the community midwife question before but as I ponder what community actually is to me, or what I would want it to be, I feel like maybe the issue lies in the community.

Midwifery is mostly fine! Women know how to take care of women, but it feels like we don’t generally know how to take care of our families, and larger groups of people that can support each other.

In going to a new place soon, I wonder whether the community will be strong and whether the community midwife (as an archetype) will be valued or if it will be the same old thing. I don’t have any answers, but lots of questions and am excited to slowly discover what’s next.

A Trip Down (Birthy) Memory Lane – and Our Location Revealed!

Ah, packing up a house! I stumbled upon notebooks and journals, all from past (in person) midwifery events of the last 15 years. It was so fun reading through conference sessions I had attended, and I wanted to share some of the brilliant teaching highlights with you from masters like Michel Odent, Marsden Wagner, Gail Hart, Lisa Barrett and more (and extra motivation if you don’t even know who some of those folks are!).

I was reminded myself of some golden nuggets of midwifery teachings and also it was just a trip down memory lane to reflect on each live event I went to and where it was and who I met. It’s been a long time in birth, and I am so grateful!

Also, I start the podcast with a location reveal and a shout out to anyone in that area of the country to get in touch! We are so excited to experience something new and make new connections and community. I can’t believe the search is over, and that it all unfolded so beautifully and perfectly in the end.

Redefining Midwifery – Part 1

After a moving update and a post-vacation summary, I’m back! I’m calling this “part 1” because I know there will be more ideas and a creative plan that come to be eventually as we settle down in our lives and I get back to birth work.

As I share, this is the “burn it down” phase! I know what I want to change and what has not been working for me, so I ask you to reconsider too what your heart is telling you and what “midwifery” might mean to you.

I have some ideas, and look forward to sharing more about all of this as it evolves and grows. I want and need to do this work in a way that feels more soul-led and aligned to me, and I am guessing many of you feel the same. If it’s broke, you don’t just fix it, you make something new.

Following Your Truth by Using a PMA (Private Membership Association)

Listen in as I share how, when and where I moved from practicing as a licensed midwife to autonomous midwifery, practicing under a PMA (aka PCA) structure in a state that requires mandatory licensing.

This is NOT a “how to” set up a PMA or why I think you need to, but a chronological explanation of my own journey and how I came to this place for myself. I really urge you to listen if you are at ALL curious, about any of it, including midwifery regulation. I’d also REALLY urge you to listen if you identify (openly or secretly!) with feeling fear in practicing autonomously.

We need more courageous, truthful birth workers who follow their own light, and not the darkness of the current legalities/regulations/persecutions around midwifery and birth.

This is really for any healer or practitioner who is curious and open about alternative ways to work with people.

Why I Love Placenta Birth

I like placentas; but I LOVE placenta birth because it allows us the opportunity as women to fully OWN the birth process from start to finish.

On this podcast, I share my own placenta birth history and how it evolved for me to go from not even remembering placenta birth to really looking forward to it. I love sharing this all and teaching it to women everywhere through knowledge, guidance and a connection to our own instinct.

Midwives and students can also benefit from this knowledge so that they can teach and help women connect to what is needed. Bonus: women are more fulfilled around their birth process and I rarely see excess bleeding. That alone is a reason to listen and give this some thought and attention!

From the Midwife Perspective: The Year’s Birth Experiences (a Review)

I am starting the year with a review of the births experiences in which I had the honor of being in the midwife role.

There were first time mamas, and fifth time mamas. There were water births and land births. Boys and girls (just about even!) and of course each experience was unique and beautiful in it’s own way. I realized after recording I left a few out because technically I wasn’t present. But for the records sake (and because I still cared so much for these women!) one woman experienced a very very preterm birth (in the hospital, obviously and all is well!) and we had at least one special client who needed to move away given all the economic stuff around this virus.

I also talk about the losses experienced as well, since that is most definitely a piece of midwifery care. It was a special year for babies coming onto this planet, and I see and feel more of those special souls making a graceful entrance in 2021.

Behind the Scenes: The Magical Tale of Rumi Sol

You’ve likely read the birth story (indiebirth.org/rumisol) but this is a long podcast I did with baby Rumi on my lap about his pregnancy and birth from a spiritual perspective.

This birth was an initiation; and I recorded this so I would remember all the cool and crazy details that make up this tale. I talk about the way his name came in, my premonitions about the birth and the spiritual meanings or thoughts behind a lot of it.

I’m happy to share these intimate details because I think there is growth and lessons for all of us on the path of conscious birth. Set aside a good bit of time to listen (if that all resonates) and let me know your thoughts or experiences.

Truly, this was one remarkable birth (and she is one remarkable friend!) and I feel SO BLESSED to have had this experience, and with her by my side. There are no coincidences; we recorded this at 3 days postpartum but we already are getting glimpses of why this birth needed to happen the way it did and why and how our work at Indie Birth will be positively affected.

The Spiritual Side of the End of Pregnancy

Not so many intellectual thoughts here at the end; but lots of feeling, and dreaming and processing my pregnancy experience thus far.

This finishes up baby #10’s pregnancy; and on this podcast I share my thoughts and dreams for birth as well as the overall themes of deep spirituality that were gifted to me over these last months.

I am so grateful; and wish all pregnant women the kind of growth and change that I was allowed while growing this baby.

Truly, a transformation and a shape-shifting has occurred and it’s something I wish we all talked more openly about. Listen in as I share with you; and let me know what your experience has been with spirituality in pregnancy.
