Quick Thoughts

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles transfer bonuses are a rare breed. In fact, it’s been more than two years since the last one (other than a targeted transfer bonus from Amex Membership Rewards that disappeared after the first time you saw it on your account, if you were even targeted in the first place). As a result, getting a 10% bonus is much better than your normal options, even if it is a low percentage bonus.

It’s certainly not a no-brainer though for a few reasons. For starters, the bonus miles are capped at 10,000 which means you’ll max out this offer when transferring a total of 100,000 points from bank programs (other than 125,000 points from Amex due to the transfer ratio) or 300,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. That’s a relatively low limit considering the also low transfer bonus rate.

Another key sticking point is that the terms state it’ll take up to 12 weeks to have the bonus miles credited to your account. That might not be a bother if you’re simply considering a speculative transfer, but if you have a redemption in mind that you want to book in the next three months, you’d still need to transfer in the full number of miles that you’ll require for said redemption.

Which leads on to another potential issue. Assuming the 10% bonus miles don’t arrive until after you want to make a redemption, those miles will be at risk of vanishing as Asia Miles expire after 18 months of inactivity. You can reset the clock by transferring in more miles before those 18 months are up, but it’s up to you to decide if that’s worth it for the sake of a maximum of 10,000 miles.

You can find the full list of eligible bank partners here and hotel partners here. Despite having Cathay Pacific as a transfer partner, Rove doesn’t appear on either list—presumably because it’s neither a bank partner nor a hotel partner. That said, Bilt Rewards isn’t, strictly speaking, a bank partner either despite them having a few credit cards with which you can earn points, so perhaps a Rove transfer will trigger a 10% bonus; I imagine it’s unlikely though.

Remember that American Express reduced the transfer ratio from Membership Rewards recently. They no longer provide 1:1 transfers, instead reducing that to 5:4. That means that with the 10% bonus, every 1,000 Membership Rewards you transfer will become 880 Asia Miles.

Although Cathay partners with many different hotel loyalty programs, the only one worth considering is Marriott Bonvoy. That’s because Marriott points transfer on a 3:1 basis, with 5,000 bonus miles being added for every 60,000 points you transfer. I don’t think that the 5,000 bonus miles you earn for every 60,000 transferred will also benefit from the 10% bonus, so maxing out the promotion this way means that transferring 300,000 Marriott points would get you 135,000 Cathay Pacific Asia Miles.

Quick Thoughts

Despite it taking almost a month to be able to register for this spending offer, if you’ve already used your Southwest card to make hotel or lodging purchases this month, that spending will still earn 2X Companion Pass qualifying points provided you register for the offer by September 30.

I’m not 100% sure what the spending limit is for this offer. It states that you’ll earn 2X Companion Pass qualifying points and that there’s a limit of 10,000 bonus qualifying points. However, you earn 1X as standard, so I’m not sure if the 10,000 limit includes the normal 1X or not. If it does include that 1X, you’ll max this out when spending $5,000 on hotels and lodging; if it doesn’t include that 1X, you’ll max it out with $10,000 spend.

This is likely a targeted spending offer. You’ll need to be logged in to your Southwest Rapid Rewards account, then click on the registration link above. If you see a yellow ‘Register Now’ button, you’ll be eligible for the offer and can register for it. If you see details of the offer after logging in but no registration button, it means you’re not targeted.

Note that the 2X points you’ll earn are only Companion Pass qualifying points—they’re not redeemable Rapid Rewards points.

This is a pretty good deal, especially because it’ll stack with shopping portal rewards, along with frequent sales that Giftcards.com has on Visa gift cards, as well as a variety of third party gift card brands. Larger sales tend to be found at this Promotions page (our affiliate link), but Giftcards.com also tends to have a Deal of the Day that can be found on the site’s homepage.

With a limit of $50 back as a statement credit, you’ll max this out when spending a total of $1,000.

Note that this Giftcards.com Chase Offer is only valid for one purchase per credit card that it’s loaded to. As a result, if you’re planning on buying several different gift cards it’ll be best to do that in one transaction that’s for $1,000 or less, unless you have this Chase Offer on multiple cards. If you do have it on multiple cards, you could do separate purchases on each of them if you want. Seeing as this Chase Offer is specifically for Giftcards.com and gift cards are the only thing that site sells, I don’t think you need to worry about your purchases being regarded as abusing Chase Offers.

Quick Thoughts

Southwest A-List status usually requires taking 20 one way flights or by earning 35,000 tier qualifying points. This promotion slashes the flight requirement by 80% seeing as you only need to take 4 one way (or 2 round trip) flights in order to get A-List status. That makes it much easier to achieve, although do note that the status earned via this promotion expires at the end of 2026, whereas A-List status earned in the conventional way would be valid through the end of 2027.

If you take 8 one way flights (or 4 round trips), you’ll get an additional 20,000 bonus Rapid Rewards points. It’s unlikely that that’ll make it worth a mileage run unless you only need one (or maybe two) further one way flights after the rest of your travel, but it’s a very good reward nonetheless.

Something important to be aware of is that the flights have to be booked via SWABIZ, GDS, or another qualifying partner that can book business flights. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter if you’re actually flying for business, plus my understanding is that SWABIZ fares match those you’ll find on Southwest.com, so it’s not like you’re being forced to pay a higher fare in order to take advantage of this promotion.

Nick reminded me that if you’re not currently registered for SWABIZ, it’s worth having your partner (if you have one) refer you. That’s because if you refer someone for SWABIZ and they register and complete 1 round trip or 2 one way flights within 90 days, the person referring the business gets 25,000 bonus Rapid Rewards points.

Also be aware that flights booked entirely with Rapid Rewards points aren’t eligible, nor are flights where a Companion Pass is being used if you’re the companion. If you’re the person with a Companion Pass and you’re traveling with your Companion, you’ll still be eligible if you’ve paid a cash fare or a fare with Cash + Points. You also have to register before booking qualifying flights and those flights have to be completed by October 31, 2026. Even if you have flights booked via SWABIZ that’ll take place during the promotion period, those won’t count if they were booked before registering for this promo.

This is likely a targeted promotion. When trying to register for it, you’ll need to be logged in to your Rapid Rewards account. After logging in and visiting the registration page, you should see a yellow ‘Register Now’ button. If you do, you’re targeted. If you don’t see that button, that unfortunately means you’re not eligible for this offer.

Depending on any elite status you currently hold with other airlines and your upcoming travel plans, it might make sense to utilize Southwest’s status match feature instead. Even if you have low level status with other domestic airlines, you can match to A-List status for 120 days and extend that for an additional 12 months if, during those 120 days, you fly 3 round trips or 6 one way flights. Those are slightly higher requirements than this limited time promotion, but the status match avenue gives you 120 days to complete the requirements—more than the ~90 days from this offer. Status matching doesn’t award 20,000 bonus points though.

Best Uses for Hilton Points

• 5th night free. Use points to book 5 nights for the price of 4. This benefit is valid on longer stays, so if staying 10 nights you’ll get both the 5th and 10th nights free. Hilton status is required to take advantage of this benefit, but you can get that with the no annual fee Hilton credit card.
• Save money on low category hotels. Hilton hotel awards start at 5,000 points per night, but those can be very difficult to find. 10,000 and 15,000 point properties are more common.  These would cost $50 or $75 when booked with purchased points when Hilton is offering a 100% bonus, or less if using the 5th night free benefit.
• Stay at high-end properties for less. Most of Hilton’s top-tier properties top out at 150,000 points per night for a standard room, although some go as high as 250,000 points. When points are being sold with a 100% bonus, 150,000 points would cost you $750, which isn’t cheap, but it is less than the cash rate at many properties charging that many points.
• Pool points with up to 10 other members. Hilton allows members to create a pool with up to 10 people to share points back and forth. This makes the effective purchase limit much higher when combining forces with other members.

Things to Know About Hilton Points

• When you book nights with points, you will not earn points for the stay unless Hilton is running a promotion that awards bonus points per night/stay which includes award nights.
• Most hotel taxes are not charged on award stays, so this can make the value of buying points even better. Arguably, this factor and the one above roughly cancel each other out.
• Resort and destination fees are waived on award stays. This alone can make it worthwhile to use points instead of cash for your bookings.

There are currently 21 Ruby Hotels properties, all of them in Europe. They can be found in the following countries:

I’ve not had a chance to stay at any Ruby Hotels yet, but I’m definitely interested as they look like beautiful, stylish properties. Earning 10,000 bonus points for every two nights you stay is a decent incentive, especially because it’ll stack with this separate promotion if you stay by the end of August.

Do be aware that this promotion is only valid on paid stays, not award stays or stays booked with Points + Cash.

Head for Points has also pointed out that there are a few nuances to how stays at Ruby Hotels work with regards to the wider IHG One Rewards program. If you have elite status you’re not eligible for a room upgrade, you can’t redeem Confirmable Suite Upgrade awards earned as part of IHG’s Milestone Rewards, and members with Diamond status aren’t eligible for complimentary breakfast. All that is disappointing considering that IHG actually purchased Ruby Hotels, rather than them simply striking up some kind of partnership.

There’s a new Amex Offer out today for targeted cardholders to earn $30 back when you spend $150 or more on qualifying purchases of prepaid lodging bookings through Priceline by August 13th, 2026 (enrollment is required). This could be a nice offer if you’re booking a hotel and could potentially make for a nice stack with a shopping portal if it works.

• A new targeted Amex offer is good for $30 back on $150 or more when you enroll in the offer and pay for prepaid lodging through priceline.com.

Quick Thoughts

Getting $30 back on $150 or more represents a savings of 20% if you are able to make a booking that costs exactly $150. It is important to note that the terms indicate that you need to go to a specific URL in order to trigger the offer. With past similar offers, I don’t think it’s actually been necessary to go to that URL. Typically, a card-linked offer like this will probably be triggered even after clicking through from a shopping portal, though there is some risk that your offer may not trigger if you don’t use the specialized URL. I would probably recommend using this on a prepaid but flexible booking that you can cancel if it doesn’t trigger the offer.

Speaking of portals, we sometimes see great shopping portal rates from Capital One Shopping. Earlier this morning, I got a targeted email offer for 5% back at Priceline from Capital One Shopping, but I have seen offers significantly better for Priceline at times, so it’s worth keeping your eye on your emails for those targeted Capital One Shopping offers. Again, I can’t guarantee they’ll stack with the offer since the offer does include a URL.

Keep in mind that Priceline does offer a Best Price Guarantee, so if you do find a better price elsewhere, it is possible that you could still get a match and also take advantage of this Amex Offer.

The standard price for transcontinental “First Class” Awards would be 35,000 United MileagePlus miles if and when United made awards available to general members. However, we don’t frequently see awards widely available in United premium cabins for reasonable prices, particularly on premium Polaris transcontinental routes.

However, particularly for travel in August and September, a glut of availability opened for United cardholders to book United premium cabin flights, including those Polaris cabins, for 27,000 miles one way. That includes routes like Newark to and from San Francisco or Los Angeles, at least some of which are operated non-stop in flatbed Polaris seats.

That said, you’ll want to check the aircraft type and itinerary carefully, as there are many awards priced at that low level that include a connection and recliner seats. Some of the non-stop options may also be operated with recliner seats, so check the details carefully before you book. This is good news for anybody with a United credit card, and prices could be even lower if you have United elite status as well.

I hadn’t really attributed much benefit to the United cardholder discounts, but if they start regularly making additional space like this available and discounted, then that’ll certainly be a strong benefit to holding a United card. Gary at View from the Wing points out that the transcontinental Polaris tickets between Newark and San Francisco or Los Angeles would additionally come with Polaris lounge access, which is something you don’t typically get with domestic first class awards, but you do on those premium transcon routes. If you’ve got a United card and you’re located on one of the coasts and you’d like to travel in August or September, it is worth a look to see if you can find availability and it is worth keeping an eye out for similar opportunities moving forward.

ALL Accor does not get much attention in the blogosphere because points are worth a fixed amount towards stays. That fixed amount is two euro cents per point. The transfer ratio from Bilt to Accor is 3:2, which means your Bilt points are worth about 1.52 cents per point when used toward Accor stays, based on the current exchange rate of  €0.01 = $0.0114. While it’s impossible to get outsized value with Accor points, one of the key advantages is that you can book any room type and use points to cover your room, either at booking or at checkout (though you may want to head to checkout early, as Greg ran into an issue where the email verification code he needed to use points at checkout didn’t come through immediately). You can also use points to cover things like dining and spa charges, etc.

For those unfamiliar, Accor has a huge footprint outside the US, with brands like Fairmont, Sofitel, Mövenpick, Novotel, Ibis, Ibis Styles, SLS, SO/, and many more. The US footprint is small, but in Europe and Asia, Accor has strong coverage. One rarely discussed program feature that can be particularly handy for family travelers is that some hotels offer a “Family rate”, whereby you get a 50% discount on the room rate for a second room.

This month, on August 1st only, you can increase value a bit further with a status offer that depends on your status with Bilt and the need to transfer some amount of points as follows:

• Bilt members with no status or Silver: match to Accor Silver when transferring 5,000 Bilt Points (which become 3,333 Accor points, which are worth €66.66)
• Bilt Gold: match to Accor Gold when transferring 5,000 Bilt Points (which become 3,333 Accor points, which are worth €66.66)
• Bilt Platinum: match to Accor Platinum when transferring 15,000 Bilt Points (which becomes 10,000 Accor points, worth €200)

Matches to Silver and Gold will be valid for 12 months from activation (the activation link will arrive within 48 hours of qualifying transfer) and have to be activated within 30 days, so you don’t need to activate immediately unless you’re about to stay at an Accor property. Matches to Platinum will be completed within 5 business days (with no need to activate) and will be valid through December 31, 2027. The nice thing here is that the match doesn’t require you to have other hotel elite status, and you don’t lose any value in the transfer. Elite status is a nice added benefit.

According to the promotion landing page, Silver status can be extended through December 31, 2027 after 3 stays and Gold can be extended to the same date with 8 stays, but it doesn’t state a timeframe for the stays. The Terms & Conditions link on the landing page leads to January 2025 Bilt Rent Day terms. Under that offer a year and a half ago, the stay window was the entire year (through December 31, 2025) in order to extend for an additional year. Assuming this offer is similar, I suppose you’ll likely have 12 months to meet the stay requirements to extend. Maybe Bilt will update the terms and conditions between now and August 1st.

Accor elite benefits are a bit less robust than some other programs, with Silver members receiving a free welcome drink and late checkout based on availability. Gold members add the potential for early check-in and free upgrades. Platinum status adds lounge access and two suite night upgrade certificates, which could certainly come in handy. If I had Bilt Platinum status, I would almost surely take the match here as I would seek out a use of the suite upgrades that, when combined with the value received in terms of points, would make for a nice win.

It is worth noting that Accor appears to be in the midst of a big push to expand reach. We’ve recently seen Amex Platinum cards in the United Kingdom and Canada add Accor Gold status as a card benefit after launching transfers to Accor in those countries. We don’t yet know whether Amex will add Accor points transfers or status for US card members, but Accor does seem to want to build interest in the program

Quick Thoughts

If you are planning on booking tours, activities, or airport transfers, these offers can certainly be quite useful. Whether you would rather earn 40% back via Capital One Shopping or 30 miles per dollar if you are a Capital One cardholder depends on how much you value the miles versus the gift card redemption options available to you. I’ve come to really like the Capital One Shopping Portal, but many readers have reported issues with purchases not tracking properly. My experience has been good, but it’s worth a mention that some swear off Capital One Shopping for less reliable tracking.

Speaking of tracking, keep in mind that Capital One Shopping offers weird tracking for travel-related purchases. My past experience with Viator has been that purchases do show up as pending within a few days rather than showing as ineligible (the way that some other travel purchases do), but your mileage may vary.

Finally, it is worth a mention that folks are sometimes targeted for higher rates when clicking through from targeted emails. If you haven’t received an email today from Capital One Shopping, it is worth clicking around to some merchant websites in the browser where you have the Capital One Shopping extension installed. Clicking around on any merchant site often triggers an email from Capital One Shopping within a few hours, and we sometimes see elevated rates in those emails. We’ve seen Viator go as high as 70% in the past.

The limit is nine per customer per day in-store, although some stores may allow more. Different stores appear to have different policies regarding the variable-load cards that some Staples now sell. Some folks report that fees are waived when they purchase them…others find that they aren’t. Your mileage may vary.

In case you’re not familiar with Turo, it’s like Airbnb for cars. People list their cars on Turo, and you can rent them. Their website and app let you filter by price, vehicle type, make, location, and more.

We had our first experience with Turo when we rented a vehicle for my 40th birthday. The car’s owner was lovely, and we had no problems at all.

It’s not just for driving exotic cars; it can also save you a decent amount of money compared to a regular rental car. My wife and her friend flew out to California to celebrate their 40th birthdays together for a mini road trip along the West Coast. They rented an Audi Convertible for 9 days, and it only cost an average of $47 per day. That was lower than even the cheapest rental cars were going for at the time, let alone how much they would’ve had to pay for a convertible from Hertz, Avis, Budget, etc.

That $47 per day even included Turo’s Standard coverage for physical damage of the vehicle, so if they’d gone for the Minimum plan or declined that coverage altogether, it would’ve been even cheaper.

Webull’s marketing is interesting to me, as they dramatically incentivize referral bonuses over sign-up bonuses. This is the first decent referral promotion that we’ve seen in some time, and offers 20 free stocks worth $3-$300 per referral, for up to successful referrals during the promotional period.

In my experience, there are usually a handful more highly valued stocks in each bundle of twenty, and the average total value ends up being between $60-$90 per 20 stocks. The most valuable single stock that I’ve ever received was around $50.

The promotion gets better if the person you refer is in your household because they’ll also receive free shares – 10 shares worth between $3-$300 each. That’s a minimum of $30, so between the two of you you’d earn between ~$90-130 in free shares (unless you hit it big, which is very unlikely).

That’s a very good return for just one referral, especially since the referred person only has to make a $100 deposit to qualify. Keep in mind that folks need to be 18+ to be eligible for this referral promotion, so signing up a child along with or instead of your partner isn’t possible.

The shopping portal Swagbucks is offering a 33,500-point (~$335) bonus for opening a new SoFi Checking/Savings account by clicking through the portal link and making a $400 direct deposit within 45 days. Once the Swagbucks are credited, they can be redeemed for cash via a PayPal gift card or for merchant gift cards. I signed up for this offer when it was 25,000 SB, and it was easy money.

The Swagbucks promo will stack with SoFi’s direct $400 sign-up bonus for a total of up to $335 back when opening a new online account and completing a qualifying direct deposit.

It’s worth noting that the amount of these SoFi/Swagbucks bonuses is sometimes targeted, so you may see a different amount than 33,500. If so, let us know in the comments.

The Deal

• Open a SoFi Checking/Savings account and get a $50-400 bonus when completing qualifying direct deposits (see table below for amounts).

SoFi Checking

• Promotion Period: 12/7/23 12:01AM ET to 12/31/2026 11:59PM ET.
• New and existing SoFi members who have never set up direct deposit with SoFi are eligible for the Direct Deposit Bonus. Bonuses are limited to one bonus per SoFi member. In the case of a joint account, direct deposit activity will only be counted towards the primary account holder’s eligibility for the bonus (the primary account holder is the member who opened the joint account first).
• In order to qualify for a bonus of either $50 OR $400, SoFi must recognize receipt of at least one Eligible Direct Deposit (as defined below) from an Eligible Participant, the first of which must be before the end of the Promotion Period. The amount of the bonus, if any, will be calculated during the Direct Deposit Bonus Period as described and defined below.
• Eligible Direct Deposit means a recurring deposit of regular income to an account holder’s SoFi Checking or Savings account, including payroll, pension, or government benefit payments (e.g., Social Security), made by the account holder’s employer, payroll or benefits provider or government agency (“Eligible Direct Deposit”) via the Automated Clearing House (“ACH”) Network.
• Deposits that are not from an employer or government agency, including but not limited to check deposits, peer-to-peer transfers (e.g., transfers from PayPal, Venmo, etc.), merchant transactions (e.g., transactions from PayPal, Stripe, Square, etc.), and bank ACH funds transfers and wire transfers from external accounts, or are non-recurring in nature (e.g. IRS tax refunds), do not constitute Eligible Direct Deposit activity. SoFi Bank shall, in its sole discretion, assess each account holder’s Eligible Direct Deposit activity to determine eligibility and may require additional documentation to complete this verification.
• The Direct Deposit Bonus Period begins when SoFi receives an Eligible Direct Deposit of $1 or more within the Promotion Period and ends 25 calendar days later (the “Direct Deposit Bonus Period”), subject to the Bonus Terms. For the avoidance of doubt, the Direct Deposit Bonus Period shall not extend beyond the Promotion Period.

• Once the Direct Deposit Bonus Period has elapsed, SoFi will determine if you have met the offer requirements and will deposit any earned bonus into your checking account within seven (7) business days. For example, if SoFi receives between $1,000.00 and $4,999.99 in Eligible Direct Deposits during the Direct Deposit Bonus Period, you will receive a one-time cash bonus of $50.
• Bonuses are considered miscellaneous income and may be reportable to the IRS on Form 1099-MISC (or Form 1042-S, if applicable).

Quick Thoughts

In order to max out these offers, you have to sign up for a SoFi checking account through the Swagbucks link and then make a total of $5000 in direct deposits.

In terms of timing, if you make your first direct deposit on July 28th (for instance), then you have until August 21st to meet the $5,000 in combined total direct deposits to qualify for the full $400 bonus. It doesn’t need to happen all at once, but it does need to happen within 25 days of the first direct deposit. Each deposit needs to be at least $1,000 to be considered qualifying. Note that the money doesn’t need to remain in the account to qualify toward the $5,000 total.

SoFi is known for being fairly strict with what it considers a direct deposit (see DOC methods list here). I was able to trigger both Swagbucks and SoFi by making a $5,000 transfer from Wells Fargo and entering “Payroll Direct Deposit T. Steinke” as the reference (based on a few positive comments I saw in the DOC thread). But, of course, YMMV.

Amazon is again offering a new pay-with-points promotion, where eligible members can save by paying with a minimum number of American Express Membership Rewards points. It seems some folks need to redeem $5 (714) in points to trigger the promo, while others need to use $10 (1429).

These offers will stack with Amazon Amex Offers, so double-dip if you can. We have sometimes seen targeted deals on offer, so it’s worth checking whether you have one and what it is.

Quick Thoughts

Personally, both my wife and I were targeted for 40% off, up to $40 off this time, which is a deal we’ll certainly use since we shop at Amazon all the time. While the terms indicate that this deal cannot be used in conjunction with other deals, it should stack with sale pricing and will stack with Amazon Amex offers.

It’s worth hitting the “activate” button sooner rather than later since you never know when the deal might get pulled.

Quick Thoughts

This could be a very good deal, especially with the 6x earnings on Visa/MC gift cards and Gift of College. Be aware of the $2K order limit though.

Note that some people have had problems getting Capital One Offers to trigger when using cards from other issuers. If that happens, despite the terms saying that it’s allowed, Capital One is usually of no help. I’ve never personally had that happen, but if you are using a non-C1 card, it may be prudent to use Capital One Shopping instead.
