Usage notes: Colorful idiomatic expressions often vary wildly from one language to the next, but couper les cheveux en quatre is one of the exceptions. The French and English expressions are very similar: they both dismiss debates over slight differences as cutting/splitting hair. Of course, since "split" means to cut the hair along its length into two pieces, it’s not quite the same as French’s "cut it into four (pieces)," but there’s no need to quibble about it.

Il ne faut jamais débattre avec Alain – il adore couper les cheveux en quatre.		You should never debate with Alain – he loves nit-picking.

Quel autre nom que le sien a autant fait écho aux rêves de l’enfance, à ces aventures improbables qui ont peuplé l’imaginaire des petits et des grands ? Car il faut bien se l’avouer, Jules Verne a entraîné avec lui des générations enthousiastes dans les abîmes des profondeurs, au centre de la Terre ou sur la lune avec l’aplomb et la confiance de ceux qui connaissent le chemin.
Selon la légende, le petit Jules, âgé de 11 ans, se serait embarqué comme mousse sur un long courrier à destination des Indes. Son père l’aurait récupéré de justesse à Paimbœuf, à 34 km de là. Jules Verne aurait avoué s’être enfui pour partir en quête d’un collier de corail pour sa cousine, Caroline Tronson, dont il était amoureux. Très rudement sermonné par son père, il aurait promis de ne plus voyager qu’en rêve. On connaît la suite.	Legend has it that little Jules, at age 11, embarked as a ship’s apprentice on an ocean liner headed to the Indies. His father barely caught him at Paimbœuf, 34 kilometers (21 miles) away. Jules Verne confessed having run away in search of a coral necklace for his cousin, Caroline Troson, with whom he was in love. Harshly scolded by his father, he supposedly promised to travel in the future only in his dreams. We know what happened next.
Ce n’est qu’en 1863, alors qu’il est âgé de trente-cinq ans, que paraît chez l’éditeur Pierre-Jules Hetzel (qui deviendra un ami très cher) son premier vrai roman, « Cinq semaines en ballon », dont le succès sera immédiat, tant en France qu’à l’étranger.
En mêlant la science à l’affabulation, il n’a pas été seulement un écrivain qui a su enflammer l’imaginaire de millions de lecteurs mais également un visionnaire dans de nombreux domaines incluant l’aéronautique. Le musée Jules Verne de Nantes rend hommage toute l’année à ce monument de la littérature d’aventures et d’anticipation.

There are three types of French articles: definite, indefinite, and partitive, and it’s not always easy to know which one you need due to differences in article usage in French and English. Here’s a detailed comparison to help you decide.

Singular articles

1) The definite article has two opposing meanings: it indicates either a specific item or something in general, the idea of something.

Par exemple…

J’ai acheté le chocolat que tu aimes bien.		I bought the (specific) chocolate you like.
Tu aimes bien le chocolat.		You like chocolate (in general).

2) The singular indefinite article is the easiest of all – it refers to one of something, and is nearly always equivalent to "a," "an," or "one" in English.*

Par exemple…

– Est-ce que tu as un chien ? – Oui, j’ai un chien.		– Do you have a dog? – Yes, I have a / one dog.
Il a acheté un oignon.		He bought an / one onion.

* The only real exception is when talking about a person’s profession or another defining characteristic:

Je suis médecin – I’m a doctor.

3) The partitive refers to a part of something, often food or drink. Using it indicates that the amount is unknown or uncountable.

Par exemple…

J’ai acheté du chocolat.		I bought some chocolate.
Tu devrais boire de l’eau.		You should drink some water.

Plural articles

1) The plural definite article, les, has the same two opposing meanings as the singular.

Par exemple…

J’ai déjà lu les* livres.*		I’ve already read the (specific) books.
Tu aimes les* livres.*		You like books (in general).

2) The plural indefinite article des refers to more than one of something countable and is equivalent to "some."

Par exemple…

Il a acheté des* oignons.*		He bought (some) onions.
J’ai vu des* chiens dans la rue.*		I saw some dogs in the street.

"Some" is not considered an article in English but rather an adjective, and it isn’t always needed.

3) The plural partitive article, also des, indicates an amount of something uncountable. It is also equivalent to "some."

J’ai acheté des* épinards.*		I bought some spinach.
Il a fait des* dégâts.*		He did some damage.

Definite vs indefinite article

The difference between the French definite and indefinite article is pretty straightforward: the definite article refers to something specific, while the indefinite refers to something unspecific.

Par exemple…

Je vois le chien dont tu m’as parlé. Je vois les chiens dont tu m’as parlé.		I see the dog you told me about. I see the dogs you told me about.
	vs
Je vois un chien dans la rue. Je vois des chiens dans la rue.		I see a dog in the street. I see some dogs in the street.

Definite vs partitive article

The definite article references the whole of something specific or the general sense of something, while the partitive indicates a part of a whole.

Par exemple…

J’aime le chocolat. J’aime les épinards.		I like chocolate. I like spinach.
	vs
Je mange du chocolat. Je mange des épinards.		I’m eating (some) chocolate. I’m eating (some) spinach.

Indefinite vs partitive article

The indefinite article is used for countable nouns, the partitive for uncountable / mass nouns.

Par exemple…

Je veux un verre d’eau. J’achète des concombres.		I want a glass of water. I’m buying some cucumbers.

Je veux de l’eau. J’achète des pâtes.		I want some water. I’m buying some pasta.

Verre and concombres are countable, while eau and pâtes are uncountable. You can tell by asking about the amount:

"How many" means it’s a countable noun.

"How much" means it’s uncountable.

Usage notes: The French expression de bon gré indicates a willingness to do something, with no sense of obligation, hesitation, or displeasure. It’s synonymous with de plein gré and both expressions can be modified with a possessive adjective:

de son bon gré		de son plein gré
de notre bon gré		de notre plein gré
de votre bon gré		de votre plein gré
de leur bon gré		de leur plein gré

You can also leave out the adjectives bon and plein:

Par exemple…

J’ai fini le travail de bon gré.		I finished the work willingly, I was happy to finish the work.
