ALGORITHMIC NATION – We’re a long time away from robot judges—but that doesn’t mean machines aren’t already influencing criminal justice decisions. In fact, many courts and correctional departments around the U.S. use risk assessment tools when considering pretrial release, sentencing, or probation and parole. While much has been written about these tools themselves, there has been little information around how they’re actually being deployed across the nation. To that end, Law.com’s Legaltech News embarked on a year-long research project to find the most widely used tools in each U.S. state, where and how they’re being implemented, and the local policies in place limiting—or expanding—their impact. Here’s what they found.
