Meta has been slapped with a €1.2 billion fine over failure to comply with the EU’s tough data privacy laws and ordered to stop transferring the data of its European Facebook users to the United States.

The ruling issued Monday by the Irish Data Protection Commission, the company’s lead regulator in the EU, contains the largest data privacy fine to be issued in the European Union since the bloc’s General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, came into force in 2018.
