Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee signed Senate Bill 5087 into law Thursday and repealed a number of state laws, including the state’s invalid death penalty statute declared unconstitutional by the state’s Supreme Court in 2018.

The Washington Supreme Court found that the state’s method of applying the death penalty was “arbitrary,” had a racially biased application and lacked a “fundamental fairness,” the Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s office said in a press release.
