U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves opened up Thursday about how he approached writing an opinion in 2020 in a qualified immunity dispute that drew national attention in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

Speaking at the 2023 First Circuit Judicial Conference in Boston, Reeves said judges should be mindful of their audience when writing in criminal justice cases that touch on larger societal issues, and craft those opinions in a way that is easy for the broader public to understand.
