The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday asked the Department of Justice to weigh in on two thorny legal disputes that aim to rein in perceived censorship of conservative voices by social media companies.

The request for briefing came in an order list published as part of the high court’s regular releases. One of the two high-profile cases has been waiting for a grant of cert for nearly a year, and appeals courts were split on how to handle the issues so far. And while the disputes are even more unique as all involved parties have sought the high court’s input on the matter, and circuit splits may hasten the court’s need for input, court watchers wonder if comments made by justices suggest cert may be out of reach for now.
