Prosecutors and defense lawyers delivered their closing arguments on Friday in the false statements trial of former Perkins Coie partner Michael Sussmann, a cybersecurity attorney who brought potentially explosive allegations involving Russia and candidate Donald Trump to the FBI weeks before the 2016 election.

Jonathan Algor, a prosecutor working with Special Counsel John Durham, argued that Sussmann lied to the FBI about his client representations because he wanted the bureau to investigate “opposition research” bankrolled by Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Sussmann wanted to conceal that both the Clinton campaign and a cybersecurity executive who had researched data on Trump’s ties to Russia were involved in developing and promoting the allegations, Algor alleged.
