A federal judge on Tuesday spoke out against threats to public officials in sentencing a man who threatened to shoot House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to 28 months in federal prison.

Cleveland Meredith Jr. did not attend the riots at the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, as he arrived in Washington, D.C., too late to be at those events. But he came to Washington with an arsenal of weapons, and texted threats against Pelosi and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser to family and friends. Meredith pleaded guilty to one count of interstate communication of threats, over a text he sent about “putting a bullet in [Pelosi’s] noggin.”
