The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday advanced a bill to make PACER free for most users.

The legislation, known as the Open Courts Act of 2021, will give users of a new version of the electronic system for the federal courts free access to filings within three years of the bill becoming law. Advocates have long pushed for free access to federal court filings, which currently costs users 10 cents to view a page, capped at $3 for larger filings.
