While no Social Security related bills became law in 2021, lawmakers were busy introducing an eye-popping number of them to address a plethora of issues.

One bill, Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust, would adopt the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly as the basis of the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), while another prohibits requiring COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of receiving benefits. Another bill seeks to strengthen Social Security for widows.

House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman John Larson, D-Conn., who sponsored the Sacred Trust bill, plans to hold a hearing Dec. 7 on his new legislation, which he introduced on Oct. 26.

Larson’s bill has been reviewed by the SSA Office of the Chief Actuary. Mary Johnson, Social Security and Medicare policy analyst with The Senior Citizens League, said bills undergoing such review have a “greater chance of moving” forward.
