The Utah Court of Appeals commended a state trial judge for calling for a new trial against Hyundai Motor Co. over a suspected vehicle fire that damaged a family’s home.

Larry and Gloria Peterson were previously awarded $752,000 in damages after a jury considered strict liability and negligence claims against the automotive manufacturer after the couple claimed a fire started in their Hyundai Sonata because of a manufacturing defect, according to the appellate court’s opinion. Specifically, they argued that a high-voltage electrical cable from the car’s battery to its engine was pinched, causing the cable’s insulation to wear away.
