A federal judge in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday raised questions about the Justice Department’s shifting position in the legal fight over former President Donald Trump’s tax returns.
The Trump Justice Department found, in a 2019 Office of Legal Counsel memo, that the returns should not be provided to a House committee because the request lacked a legitimate legislative purpose. That position was reversed earlier this year by the OLC under President Joe Biden, which said the administration should not look into the motive behind a congressional request for information.
