Lawsuits filed on behalf of consumers dropped in 2020, even though the COVID-19 pandemic prompted new filings, according to a new research report from Lex Machina.

Lex Machina’s Consumer Protection Litigation Report 2021, released on Thursday, found that consumer filings in federal courts, including those brought by the Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, fell to 12,922 cases from 14,432 between 2019 and 2020. A similar decline occurred in class actions, which fell from 3,811 in 2019 to 3,215 last year.
