Vanguard Names a College President to Its Board

Vanguard says David A. Thomas has been elected to its board of directors and to the board of trustees of each of the Vanguard funds.

Thomas, who has a Ph.D. in psychology, is president of Morehouse College and has worked in higher education for over 30 years. Earlier, he served as the H. Naylor Fitzhugh Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, dean of Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business and an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. 

“We are thrilled to welcome David to Vanguard’s board of directors,” said Vanguard Chairman and CEO Tim Buckley, in a statement. “He is a purpose-driven leader who has extensive experience in setting a vision, inspiring an organization, managing operations, and developing talent equally. Our client-owners will benefit tremendously from his governance.”

Thomas currently is a board member for DTE Energy, the American Red Cross and the Posse Foundation. He has worked on and written extensively about diversity in the workplace, including co-authoring the book “Breaking Through: The Making of Minority Executives in Corporate America.” He has also been a consultant on organizational change. 

In addition to Buckley and Thomas, Vanguard’s board includes: 

  • Emerson U. Fullwood, a retired Xerox executive and executive in residence at the Rochester Institute of Technology
  • Amy Gutmann, Ph.D., president of the University of Pennsylvania; 
  • F. Joseph Loughrey, a retired president and COO of heavy equipment maker Cummins Inc.; 
  • Mark Loughridge, a retired IBM executive, and an advisory board member for the University of Notre Dame’s College of Arts and Letters and Kellogg Institute for International Studies;
  • Scott C. Malpass, a former chief investment officer and vice president of the University of Notre Dame; 
  • Deanna Mulligan, board chair of the Guardian Life Insurance Company of America and its former CEO and president;
  • André F. Perold, the George Gund Professor of Finance and Banking-Emeritus at the Harvard Business School, and chief investment officer and co-managing partner of HighVista Strategies;
  • Sarah Bloom Raskin, who served as deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury and governor of the Federal Reserve Board; and
  • Peter F. Volanakis, the retired president and COO of Corning Inc.
