WHAT WE’RE WATCHING
ALTERNATIVE FACTS? - Sort of like Jan Brady’s “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia” moment, law firms are getting sick of hearing from clients about how ALSPs are so much more efficient, innovative and customer service-oriented. As Law.com’s Frank Ready reports, law firm leaders are pushing back against the notion that their organizations are lagging behind ALSPs in those areas, arguing that it’s not necessarily rooted in reality. “I do come across it a fair amount. And I will tell you it can be frustrating because a lot of it is kind of client perception,” said Liz Harding, a shareholder at Polsinelli, noting that the increased presence of companies’ C-suite executives when law firms pitch to new clients may be feeding what she believes is a misconception. But not everyone agrees with Harding’s perspective. “I don’t think it’s unfair,” said Brett Burney of Burney Consultants. “I think it’s a reality that [ALSPs] are more efficient and they are more tech-friendly. And the reason I say that is because law firms could compete on efficiency, but that means drastic changes to the way that they do legal work, which really comes down to billable hours, right?”
