In a case that has drawn national attention based on claims that it represents systemic racial bias in the justice system, a Kansas judge has ordered a new trial, citing ineffective assistance of counsel, for a young Black man who was convicted by an all-white jury of raping a 17-year-old white girl.

And after a post-decision bond hearing Tuesday, one of the man’s current defense lawyers, Joshua Dubin, told Law.com that he has had “a number of productive conversations with” Lawrence, Kansas-based District Attorney Suzanne Valdez “about figuring out a way forward to resolve this case prior to a second trial.”
