WHAT WE’RE WATCHING

PRIVACY IS PARAMOUNT - Last week, Virginia passed the Consumer Data Protection Act, becoming the second U.S. state to have its own consumer data protection regulation. New York, Washington State and others are also mulling their own regulations that promise to be just different enough to drive everyone insane. Meanwhile, the prospect of a federal privacy law looms on the horizon. When all is said and done, what we’ll likely be left with is a tangled web that could easily ensnare corporate legal departments and law firms that have decided to forego putting privacy gurus on the payroll. As Law.com’s Zach Warren writes in this week’s Law.com Barometer column, skimping on privacy compliance expertise has the potential to end in a public relations—not to mention human resources—disaster. To receive the Law.com Barometer directly to your inbox each week, click here.
