More than 200 college and university professors from across the country and across academic disciplines have joined forces to launch a new organization dedicated to protecting academic freedom on campus.
The Academic Freedom Alliance—unveiled this week—seeks to provide backing and legal assistance to professors who come under fire for their speech, their work, and their teaching. The group’s initial membership draws heavily from the legal academy, with law professors comprising about a quarter of those involved. The law schools at Harvard, Stanford, Duke, Georgetown and the University of Texas are among those with multiple faculty on the alliance’s member roster.
