A New Jersey man’s false-arrest suit is part of a growing wave of litigation over facial recognition technology, and observers say more suits are coming.

Nijeer Parks’ complaint against the Woodbridge, New Jersey, police department, along with cases naming Facebook, Macy’s and Kroger as defendants, target software that identifies people by facial measurements. Now, besides the handful of suits against police departments over the use of facial recognition, other cases are targeting businesses that use it for employee timekeeping and companies that “scrape” images from social media to build facial recognition databases.
