Elissa Miller, a partner at Los Angeles-based SulmeyerKupetz, will serve as interim trustee for the bankruptcy of Girardi Keese, according to a notice filed on Wednesday in the firm’s bankruptcy case. Last month, creditors filed Chapter 7 involuntary bankruptcies against the Los Angeles firm and its founder, Tom Girardi, after a federal judge issued a $2 million contempt judgment against him for failing to pay clients with settlements over the 2018 crash of a Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Barry Russell, of the Central District of California, held the first hearing in the cases on Tuesday, but neither Girardi nor a representative of his law firm appeared. Girardi and his firm have until Jan. 15 to respond.
