Richard “Dick” L. Thornburgh, whose numerous roles as a lawyer in public service included Pennsylvania governor and U.S. attorney general, died Thursday at the age of 88.

Thornburgh was also a longtime partner at Pittsburgh-based K&L Gates for many years, until retiring from the firm last year. He spent a decade at the firm before leaving in 1969 to be a U.S. attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania. From there, he went on to lead the criminal division of the U.S. Department of Justice.
