The Federal Defenders of New York on Friday called for increased COVID-19 testing at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center amid an apparent outbreak at the facility, where some units have been placed in a quarantine status.

Fifty-five inmates tested positive for COVID-19 between Tuesday and Thursday of this week, according to a report from the Bureau of Prisons. The report showed a “dramatic increase” at the facility since testing began in March, U.S. District Judge Margo Brodie of the Eastern District of New York noted repeatedly during a status conference Friday with BOP officials and the Federal Defenders.
