Welcome back to Ahead of the Curve. I’m Karen Sloan, legal education editor at Law.com, and I’ll be your host for this weekly look at innovation and notable developments in legal education.

This week, I’m chatting with St. Mary’s law professor A.J. Bellido de Luna, who was the driving force behind the country’s first national, virtual mock trial competition. Modifying the mock trial competition format to Zoom was no easy feat, but teams from 98 different law schools have now had the chance to display their trial skills, or soon will, thanks to his creativity and commitment to restoring some of the many opportunities law students have lost amid the pandemic. Next, I’m checking in on the Association of American Law Schools’ new Impact Award, which will go to the five black women law deans who created the organization’s Law Deans Antiracist Clearinghouse Project.
