INSIDE OUT – Of the many sharp shifts the legal industry has been forced to make on the fly since the start of the pandemic, the move toward outsourcing is among the sharpest. As Christine Simmons writes in this week’s Law.com Barometer column, law firm leaders are taking advantage of pandemic circumstances to dramatically reduce overhead and keep profit margins steady. Through outsourcing, firms can save money by streamlining non-legal services work to one place—usually a low cost area where market salaries are a sliver of the pay compared with those in big cities. But outsourcing does have its drawbacks, which firms are going to have to learn to deal with as the practice becomes more commonplace and more expansive.
