Three months after San Francisco-based Discord, a platform for online gaming, announced that it raised $100 million in funding, the company hired Clint Smith to lead its three-person legal team and oversee its policy and trust and safety functions.

Smith, who previously served as general counsel at tech companies such as UUNET, MySQL and DataStax Inc., said his new role allows him to put on a policy hat and help a tech company expand its reach. He said the legal department has an important role in helping Discord do more than serve as a platform for video game players.
