Luther to Succeed Engelhardt as Navy Mutual CEO: Personnel Moves

The board of the Navy Mutual Aid Association — a mutual insurer that provides life insurance and income annuities for members of the military and their families — says retired Rear Admiral Brian Luther will succeed retired Rear Admiral Bruce Engelhardt as the organization’s president and chief executive officer.

Engelhardt is retiring from his position as head of Navy Mutual after 15 years.

Luther began working for the Arlington, Virginia-based company as its chief strategy officer in 2018.

Luther has a bachelor’s degree in computational mathematics from Marquette University.

He has completed the Navy Nuclear Power Training Program and has a master’s degree in business from George Mason University.

While Luther was in the Navy, he served as executive officer of the USS Nimitz and as the commanding officer of the amphibious assault ship USS Tarawa, as the commander of the nuclear-powered aircraft  carrier USS George H.W. Bush, and as the commander of Carrier Strike Group 2.

Luther also served as assistant budget officer for the Navy, from 2000 through 2002, and as a congressional appropriations liaison for the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Policy at the U.S. Department of Defense, from 2009 through 2011.

When Luther left the Navy, in 2018, he was deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for budget.

Luther’s LinkedIn entry shows that 56 of his colleagues in the U.S. Navy have rated him as being highly skilled at being in the Navy.

In other personnel moves news:

Primerica, Duluth, Georgia, has hired Lisa Brown to be executive vice president and chief administrative officer.

Brown previously was human resources director at Delta Air Lines.

Brown has a bachelor’s degree in human resources from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in business from Kennesaw State University.

Early in her career, before she joined Delta, she was a call center supervisor in the Atlanta area for Prudential Financial.

AmeriLife Group, Clearwater, Florida, has hired Tim Calvert to be the company’s chief operating officer.

The life, health and annuity distributor says Calvert will oversee all of the company’s back office and middle office functions, including information technology group functions.

Calvert will also be in charge of developing a direct-to-consumer platform, AmeriLife says.

Calvert previously spent three years as a managing director and partner at Boston Consulting Group. He also spent about 18 years as a consultant at Deloitte. While he was Deloitte, he was the sector leader for the U.S. life and annuity sector.

Anthem, Indianapolis, has named Jeffrey Alter executive vice president for its IngenioRx and Anthem Health Solutions units.

Alter previously was president of Arcturus One Consulting.

Before that, Alter was chief executive officer of the Commercial Group at UnitedHealth Group’s UnitedHealthcare’ unit.

Alter has a bachelor’s degree in marketing and a master’s degree in business from St. John’s University.

He started out working as a financial analyst for aerospace and defense companies. He got into health insurance is the vice president of finance and underwriting at Vytra Health Plans, in 1995.

He later was a vice president at Oxford Health Plans.

He worked for UnitedHealth from 2002 through 2018.

He has a member of the board of governors at St. John’s.

Securian Financial, St. Paul, Minnesota, has hired Scott Harrison to be a regional sales vice president for sales of retirement plan products and services to small and mid-size employers.

Harrison will work with retirement plan professionals in Southern California.

Harrison previously was a retirement plan consultant with The Standard.

Harrison has a bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University. He holds the Accredited Investment Fiduciary professional designation.

Centene Corp., St. Louis, has promoted three executives to executive vice president.

The health insurer has named Jonathan Dinesman has executive vice president, government relations; Shannon Bagley, executive vice president, human resources; and H. Robert Sanders executive vice president, human resources. They will continue to report to Michael F. Neidorff, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Centene.

The executives previously were senior vice presidents.
