Top Texas Insurance Regulator to Give Up Post in September

Kent Sullivan, the Texas insurance commissioner, says he’ll be giving up that post in September and returning to the private sector.

Sullivan has not yet said what he expects to do in the private sector.

In Texas, the governor appoints the insurance the commissioner. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, appointed Sullivan to be commissioner in October 2017.

Sullivan succeeded David Mattax, who died from cancer in April 2017.

Sullivan took over as insurance commissioner shortly after Hurricane Harvey flooded Houston. He managed the Texas Department of Insurance response to that disaster.

In the life and annuity sectors, he may be best known as the chair of the Life Actuarial Task Force at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Sullivan has a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from the University of Virginia.

Before he became the Texas commissioner, he was a partner at Jackson Walker LLP,  a law firm with offices in Austin, Texas, and Houston. He has also has served as a first assistant attorney general in Texas, and he spent two years serving as a justice on the Texas Court of Appeals.
