Attorneys representing the family of Eric Garner asked a New York state judge on Monday to approve a judicial inquiry into alleged neglect and violation of duties by city officials in response to the unarmed Black man’s 2014 killing at the hands of police in Staten Island.

The family and their supporters sued Mayor Bill de Blasio, former New York City Police Commissioner James O’Neill and Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro last August in Manhattan Supreme Court, alleging an ongoing cover-up of the incident and the “related failure to discipline officers” involved.
