The European Commission has opened an in-depth investigation into Google’s plan to acquire wearable fitness technology maker Fitbit, with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton advising the internet giant.

According to a statement by the Commission, European officials are concerned that Google’s planned €1.7 billion purchase of the device maker, announced in November of last year, will give the search giant control over health and wellness data collected through Fitbit’s smart watches and fitness trackers.
