5 Lessons From the Book of 1 Kings

Here’s 5 Lessons We Learn From the book of 1 Kings.
1.) Life is Easier with the Wisdom of God
When God offered Solomon anything he wanted – he wisely chose – wisdom. Why did he choose wisdom? Because he knew that his job being the King would be easier with wisdom.
We live in the Age of Information. Knowledge is always — just one click away and we tend to think that knowledge will make our lives easier. But information cannot compare to the revelation of God’s Word!
Life is too complex and the road too unknown, for us to google all of our answers. Only the Lord knows every detail of our lives and what is best for us. And while life will always have twists and turns and trials and difficulties, life is easier when we follow God’s will and God’s ways because we can have peace knowing that he is with us and guiding us. Becoming wiser is as simple as asking God for wisdom, reading God’s Word daily and then applying what we have learned.
2.) We need more silence in our lives.
Solomon’s temple was built without the sound of a hammer or axe. The temple was built up in silence.
We were not made to work.work.work and never rest or to talk all day or to serve and minister to others non-stop. We were made to be the temple of the Lord. The Holy Spirit is inside of us. We need to be still and listen to the voice of the Lord.
We are built up in the Lord through silence.
3.) Our friendships affect our choices.
King Solomon was wiser than all the other men!!! Yet, 1 Kings 11 tells us that this incredibly wise man made an incredibly foolish decision to intermarry with women of other faiths and his heart was led astray. This led to the Lord’s anger and Solomon’s downfall.
There’s a popular saying that goes like this: “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.”
Good friends will push us closer to Christ and towards what is good and noble, but bad friends will introduce us to new things and new ways that could lead us astray. 1 Corinthians 15:33 says: “Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
4. Even the strongest and most godly men face discouragement.
Elijah was a man who faithfully followed the Lord, had a powerful prayer life and experienced the power of God over and over again and yet he came to this moment of despair in 1 Kings 19:4 where he said to God: “O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.” Elijah was so discouraged…he wanted to die!
None of us are above feeling alone and discouraged. Even the strongest of Christians grow weary. I’m so thankful that the scriptures include this very real and authentic look at the human emotions of a godly man. Discouragement is a battle we all face and seeing Elijah wrestle with it shows us that we are not alone.
5.) . It’s important to finish well.
Solomon started out great – but he did not finish well.
Elijah started out great but then grew discouraged – but he did not give up. Elijah finished well.
Solomon in all of his wisdom, who built the extravagant temple for the Lord and had two appearances from God himself – married foreign women and turned into a fool – worshipping pagan gods. Watching the fall of this great man is painful. Sin brought ruin to his kingdom and family dynasty. Sin ruins the honor of great men and ruins their families.
We assume that we will be wiser as we age, but Solomon was wiser in his youth than in his old age. Age does not automatically bring wisdom but rather it’s an issue of our hearts and our obedience to God that brings wisdom.
Just like Elijah, when we take our eyes off of God and his power and we focus on our fears and troubles of life, we will face discouragement. Elijah struggled just like we do yet, he continued on in trusting God and he continued to be used mightily by God.
Let’s be like Elijah… Continue on! Do not give up!

Loved, loved this book of kings. I know it may sound odd but I never feared the lord. But as I read thru the 1st book of kings I begin to understand Proverbs 9:10. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Just understanding the Kings of Isreal, their consequences of sin, how many times they sinned and were forgiven. How severe the result of sin can be for everyone. We really should fear our punishment.
