Overcoming Middle School Awkwardness: Developing Confidence and Maturity

Class
Emily Kendall, PhD Fellow | SchoolhouseForAmerica
Average rating:5.0Number of reviews:(22)
In this course, we will discuss awkward moments that can occur during the change from elementary to middle school, and how to navigate these moments!

Class experience

- Students will be able to explain the differences between blending in, fitting in, and belonging.
- Students will understand and discuss the world online and best practices for navigating it well.
- Students will discuss the influences around them and determine goals for discovering self-worth.
I have taught middle school students for many years, and served as a transition specialist for students with disabilities to transition their IEP's from elementary to middle school.
Students should bring a way to take notes or write down questions, but nothing more is needed.
We will not discuss any subjects in this class that may be considered sensitive (eg. sex, drugs, religion, gender identity, or mental health concerns such as eating disorders, depression, etc.). If these subjects are brought up by the student, I will gently refer them to their parent for discussion in the home. This course is meant to be realistic but focus on navigating the school environment only, not on major life concerns that may warrant more serious conversations.
